Default spring rates

Does anyone know how to calculate spring rates?
I know spring rates are measured in lbs/inch, but what does that mean?
If a spring has a rate of 100 lb/in, for example, does that mean that it takes 100 pounds of force/weight to compress the spring one inch from its free height?
If anyone knows about this stuff, I'd appreciate if you could share!
