I know there are a coupla posts about spacers but I wasnt too clear on a coupla things.

I heard that to get aftermarket rims one would have to change the brake set-up in the back from captive to non captive rotors or you can get wheel spacers for your car. Now if this is true, what size spacers do i need?...i have seen 5mm, 15mm, 20mm, 25mm. what is the most that i have to have to fit new rims.

I know that spacers are very bad and dangerous to drive on but as someone poined out before, i HATE the gap between the rims and the fenders.

plus, can anyone explain offset for me. what is the offset for 97's and tell me a little about it all.

The captive rotors are on the front, not the back.

The spacers you'll need to get, if you so choose, will need to be hub-centric to minimise the problems that could arise.

The offset on my stock rims is +42mm. Depending on the rims you get, i.e. width, the offset will need to be calculated to ensure you have enough clearance between the wheels & the struts, as well as from the wheel/tire & the guards/fenders.

http://www.311s.org/tech/wheels/offset.html

its the front wheels that can be captive/non-captive too

on the rears, you can only have noncaptive discs, or drums ( i believe, someone correct me if wrong, or confirm its right please)

You do not mention what year tib you have... but anything from 99 on does not have captive rotors. Some 98s do not have them either.

I was confused by that.. thinking it was a style of rim by the question.

Honestly, before I got involved with spacers, I would convert my car to a later disc brake setup. Parts are cheaper to replace, easier to upgrade, and you get a BIG choice of rims.

you shouldn't need spacers if you're converting to a non captive rotor. the reason for the spacer would be to clear those ugly ass bolts on the hub...

i'm doin the swap soon, so is silvertibs. one of us will have a DIY on it. in the FAQ thread, there is a link in there for a swap, but its for an Accent. pretty much the same thing.

click FAQ on the nav bar, i believe its the 3rd or 4th post i made in there

Brake conversion aside, I personally measured the captive bolts (that are on the front rotors only) to stick out 7mm from the hat. So, to answer one of your original questions, you would need spacers that are at least 7mm thick (mine, for example, are 8mm thick).

The problem is that most hub-centric spacers (mine are not) that I've seen come in the sizes you mentioned (5, 15, 20, 25). 5mm isn't enough to clear the bolts & 15mm doesn't leave you with enough thread on the stock studs... You'll need longer studs or, ideally, to custom fabricate some spacers.

sry i said rear, i meant front brake setup but thanks for the clarification. and thanks for answering my question about the spacers OzFxCoupe. what do you think of shark racing spacers....i know that the H&R ones come reccomended because they are specified as hub centric, but has anyone had any expierience with the 10mm shark racing ones yet?

Oh and i would love to see a DIY for a tiburon brake conversion from captive to non-captive rotors. if i had the money and knowledge i would rather do that than put spacers on. so let me know when you guys do the conversion.

thanks a lot everyone!

so you have spacers on your car that are 8mm thick? have you changed the studs on your brakes so they are longer? or do you have enough thread on the stud to put the lug back on safely?
