Went to my mechanics to have my car inspected and they said the front right wheel bearing needs to be replaced. I can change them out myself since it only takes about a half hour to do and my dad works for a machine shop that can press them in and out for me.

So when I got home from the mechanics, I jacked up the car and wanted to see how much play was in the wheel. There was literally no play what so ever. Everything was fine. I even checked the other wheel and same thing. Nothing. Do you guys think the mechanic was just trying to screw me or is there some other way to tell you have a bad bearing without there being any play in the wheel?

 

Go to another mechanic for inspection.

 

Have them point it out to you. IME, half the mechanics around here are crooks trying to sell more parts with more labor.

 

Do you hear any noise from the bearing when you turn the car? I changed mine a couple weeks ago, made a humming noise when turning the wheels while driving. There was no play if I tried to move the wheel, but when I had everything disassembled there was quite a bit more play. I try to stay away from garages since there only goal in life seems to be to sell more parts and not actually fix anything.
