Just take a look at them through the spokes of your wheels. You can see where the pads touch the rotor by the shading of the metal.

allright, the rotor is a spinning circle, right. the caliper is the big thing that clamps the brake pads against the rotor causing friction which = you slowing down. most of the rotor that you can see, the brake pads touch. it should eb the real smooth, shiny part of the rotor. also gets red under extreme breaking smile.gif

that's what I thought.... so if you paint everything except for that... why paint at all?

because normally, that part doesnt rust at all. if you drive atleast once a day, the pads will get rid of any rust that exists on there, which will never be much. a lot of people just paint the whole damn thing so that they dont have to cover anything up and just let the pads take the paint off their part of the rotor.

so basically, you paint the part that doesnt get rubbed by the pads to keep the rust out, and you let the brake pads take care of any rust that may form on the part of the rotor that they touch.

sounds like a great idea... I'll look into it once I get my slotted rotors

the only time I really saw rust on my car is when I would go out to the parking lot after a rain... my car usually sits there for a few days between driving it since I'm at college and walk almost everywhere I go

I painted mine just last week with this 1200F paint for rotors and let me tell you, if you take the time to tape the part the brakes (doesn't rust) you will be at it for hours.

I cleaned everything and painted everything (spray paint) and took off 15 minutes later to burn the paint off the breaks! worked just fine and now they look good since everything else is painted.

At it for hours? I doubt that.. there is a MUCH simpler way to tape them off.. cover the rotor face liberally with tape.. do not worry about it hanging off of the sides or getting on the hat.. Once you have everything you want protected, take a razor knife and gently score and cut the tape where it overlaps the areas you want to paint. If you use something like three inch wide tape.. it should not take you more than fifteen minutes a rotor.

I tried one rotors and the job looks orible because I didn't paint everything, the other 3 I painted everything and once the paint burned away they looked great! But taping would probably make a good job you just don't need to do it.

I would have to add this also.. if you are spraying, make sure you get some distance down the cooling vents on the front discs.. those get REALLY rusty over time.
