Gut it? There is nothing to a Miata, 10lbs of carpet, 15lb passenger seat? Then if you cage it thats 100lbs, a Ssca approved roll bar starts out at about 35lbs for a basic 4 point.

First thing to do is remove the stock air box assembly that has the airbox literally inchs away from the header, then install a cold air intake pullin air from the from bumper than move the timing up 2 degrees! Make a way better power band!

I already have an intake with a cold air box, and exhaust.

Maybe a '90, but not an '01. I'd bet all of my cars I can pull at least 400Lbs. out of that car.

I am no expert on the Miata, but looking at the car it would be a serious chore to lose 400lbs. Probably possible, but I think it would include removing things not normally removed when stripping out a vehicle even for track use.

Hardtop and softtop, carpet, sound deadening, stereo system, airbags, all interior trim except the dash, all a/c equipment (leave just the heater core in the HVAC box along with the blower), all p/s gear, spare tire and tools, passenger's seat, lightweight driver's seat, wipers and wiper motor, factory seatbelts, emissions crap... I can go on. If I got a Miata for $2500, it would be a trailer queen track car. No plates or insurance.

That would be fun, but I'm more of the opinion that I got a nice $4500 car at a discount, might as well enjoy having a nice car, do a few mods as I see fit to enhance my enjoyment, and when it gets to the end of its useful life I can strip it out and track it.

For a track car I would be more tempted to buy a well used NA Miata with some sort of saleability issues for $1k and start from there.

I deleted my Hvac, ps, ac, and removed my seat, replaced with a Corbeau and installed a roll bar. My Hvac, ps, ac, drivers seat, was 92 lbs. Added roll bar and seat was 52lbs back. Also the interior and trim and door skins if your lucky with carpet might net you 25lbs. Only way I see cutting weight off a car like this, is to cut out door bars and front and rear crash bars, removed passenger seat. That may get you 125lbs sense all the crash bars are plastic and the seats are light. Removing the stereo is a lost cause 2lb headunit and 2 12oz door speakers.

I took 550Lbs. out of an STI. I can find 400Lbs in a Miata. Here's my bet... someone get a Miata. If I pull 400Lbs. out of it without making it unsafe, I get the car. If I can't, I give you all 4 of my cars.
