Cadillac's Evoq concept will hit the road as the XLR
Cadillac's Evoq show car, unveiled at the 1999 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, will be named the XLR when it goes into production as a 2003 model. Developed on GM's next-generation "performance car" platform--designed from the outset for convertibles--the XLR will feature hydroformed steel side rails and an aluminum cockpit structure, said to contribute to a chassis which "will be class leading in structural efficiency, ride quality, and agility." The car will have a fully-automatic, retractable hardtop. It will also mark the first rear-wheel-drive application of the 4.6L high-output Northstar engine and will utilize an electronic five-speed transaxle. The XLR will also make use of Michelin's PAX run-flat tire system. It will be produced on a dedicated line at GM's assembly plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
