Hello everyone,

I'm not sure exactly what this part is called, but for some reason I am thinking rear upper control arm. Anyway, it's the part that that links up to the control arms on the rear wheels... A horizontal beam. I'll post pictures of the part I mean later tonight, just to be clear. Mine has holes rusted through and it is in obvious need of changing.

I've inquired about getting the part, and dealer cost for a new one is approx $500 (my father is a mechanic and can get them at dealer cost). Since I live in Canada and my car has seen many winters before I bought it, the rust just raped certain parts of the underside of the car that weren't properly undercoated. I figure since many of the members of this site live in parts of the USA that don't see any snow, perhaps a member who is parting out their car would be willing to sell this part to me. Since I doubt we'll be able to remove the bolts holding the rear control arms in place (major rust), I might as well buy the whole assembly, meaning that horizontal beam and the rear control arms that are connected to it.

Is anyone willing to do this? It needs to come off a '99 Tiburon, since I need to make sure everything fits back on the same way again.

THANKS!

Do you see it in one of those?

I see it. It's listed as number 27 (on page 14), the suspension crossmember. I need that and the arms that are attached to it basically. Thanks! Do you have one of these for sale?

EDIT: By the way, Here's a couple of photos of the rust I'm talking about, for those who want to see it. I actually contacted Hyundai of Canada to see if they could help me resolve the issue (possibly have some sort of hidden recall on these that wasn't made public). I'll find out soon enough anyway.

crazy.gif don't hit a pothole. Good luck on a recall, but that looks like a 10 year old car that's been on salted roads to me. Try wrecking yards . . . calling one in the States might be cheaper and more likely to yield a good part than one up there. Also keep your eyes open for part-out threads.

Your best bet is a junkyard for that part if you can't get hyundai to replace it for you.

That sucks that its rusted that bad before it got noticed. I would weld some 1/8th inch flat plate that would cover that hole and go a couple inches past the hole on either side if you can't find a replacement soon for the crossmember.

I thought about welding a plate to cover it, but that won't quite solve the problem. I intend to keep this car for many years to come, so a full replacement is required. My concern about looking into junkyards for the part is that most likely those Tiburons were winter driven as bad as mine was before I bought it and therefore likely to be in similar, if not worse condition than what I currently have. I was hoping to get something from a part of the US that doesn't get snow like we do here, which would mean little to no rust on the underside.

Good news is: Hyundai of Canada replied to me less than 24 hours after I contacted them. They said they will investigate the matter and asked me a few questions for clarity, so at least something may get done. I suppose it helps when you mention that your father is a Master Hyundai Technician. 09.gif We'll see how things go and I'll DEFINITELY post the results of what happens in case anyone else encounters this situation.

Thanks for the link there Mr. Muffin. However, the dealer cost price of the part comes up to roughly that much for me. You're right, my best bet is to check a junkyard, but as I stated before, I'd have to look into the USA for one, otherwise I'll end up with the same problem down the road. I'm hoping Hyundai will be cool and send me a new part. It would save me a lot of money since my father and I can do the labour ourselves. Anybody know of any reputable junkyards in the USA where I would likely find a non-rusted out part?

Thanks again!

If it's in the Northern US you'll have the same risk as up there, but I agree that you should check some yards up there. You can generally see rust, and a couple knocks with a hammer will tell you if it's deep or not. Rust in a snow-heavy environment (yay salt) is still prevented by good maintenance. So unless you find a junkyard in Florida that will pull and ship (expensive) you're going to run the same risks at higher cost.

Yeah, unfortunately my car was driven for a good 8-9 winters before I bought it (and a lot at that... the car had over 190k KM on it when I bought it). Once I got it, it was a pretty bad rustbucket but I spent a fortune on getting it repainted and having all the rust removed. Unfortunately, we never noticed how bad the rust on that crossmember was until fairly recently when we tapped on it a little and it all crumbled apart.

My issue with junkyards of any kind really is that I have no history of the car I'm looking at. For all I know, the part they are shipping me could have come from a Tiburon that spent 3/4 of its life in Michigan or Maine and ended up in a junkyard in Florida or Arizona at the end of its life. Unless I can see the part with my own eyes, or can rely on trusted members from this community, I can't be sure of the quality of the part I'm buying.
