no hid's require any relays, but they reduce the power surge during startup and output going through both harness that weren't meant to run hot by half because the left headlight is connected directly to the battery. jay-m explained the reason why relay kits are better in his manuals. i believe you can also turn on the headlights with the car left off. but i haven't tried it yet.

The odd time, with mine anyways, one or both lights do not turn on but after turning the switch off then back on their fine. The biggest reason I see for a relay kit is the fact that, again with mine anyways, the gauges loose power for a second, the gauges drop and the lights go out.
