1.8 L turbo
The 2.0 turbo kit for the Tiburon, what kind of modifications would be needed to make it fit the 1.8L in the Elantra? Also, I've been seein' a lot about retuning the chip that comes w/ it. Any info regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

We currently offer both a Turbo w/Intercooler system, and a Supercharger system for the 1.8L/2.0L Hyundai Elantra and Tiburon. After test fitting and tuning of several vehicles, here's where our applications are at now:
1.8L/2.0L (I4--BETA-I / BETA II engines) Hyundai--`96-`03 Tiburon/`96-`00 Elantra Turbo w/Intercooler Kit
The Turbo w/intercooler kit has been meticulously engineered for optimum performance and reliability. The suggested retail price is $2600 (price increase to $2800 as of January 1, 2003) plus shipping from Southern California. This system uses a Mitsubishi TD04H-15T turbo, and includes the exhaust manifold, fifth fuel injector, fuel pressure regulator, a front-mount air-to-air intercooler and plumbing, and all the required parts and mounting hardware, plus a "Unichip" controller (already pre-set) to work with your Engine Control Module to maximize performance (electrical wiring is required), and will work on both MAP and MAF engines, without any other modifications required (except you will need to purchase 2 head gaskets for the decompression plate supplied). All kits are pre-assembled as far as possible.
Performance improvements for the turbo kit are approximately 75+ HP & 90+ ft/lbs of torque "to-the-wheels" @ 10 lbs./psi boost. (1.8L figures will be lower due to lower baseline figures, but the percentage of increase should be the same.) Dyno charts on U.S vehicles will be available soon. Our systems as an aftermarket item, carries a "1-Year / Unlimited Mileage Warranty "against defects in materials and workmanship.
Turbo Kit Updates as of 11/18/02
1) We are working on the re-location of the first catalytic converter (or sourcing a smaller replacement cat) if CARB certification is determined feasible (will know in the next few weeks).
2) We have discovered a few previous kits sold with Fuel Pressure Regulators set at incorrect lower psi, and will now check all FPR settings here prior to shipment.
3) After reviewing the "pre-programmed" maps on the Unichip supplied, have found them to be quite adequate for U.S. smogged vehicles, and have decided no changes or revisions are necessary for this application.
4) Having discovered no opening large enough in the front of our `03 Elantra (applies to `01-to-`03) to plumb the intercooler piping, have made the decision to re-design and convert to our "AQUA-COOLED" liquid-to-air intercooler, and should aide in getting CARB approval (if cat issue can be resolved).
5) If catalytic and CARB issues can be resolved with the new "re-engineered Aqua-cooled" version, will make the decision to either discontinue the original "air-to-air" version, or decide to offer as a separate application.
6) Once the basic kit is ready, will re-evaluate the price of the kit, and plan to look into development of "stage one", and possible "stage two" upgrades.
This kit was recently re-tuned and dyno'd on our Dyna-Pak wheel dyno, on a `99 Tiburon (BETA I-engine w/over 60,000 miles on it, using 91 octane gas--no front cat) and got 180.6-HP and 198.9-ft/lbs of torque "to-the-wheels" at 11-lbs/psi of boost! This was our first kit ever installed in the U.S. (July of `01)!
1.8L/2.0L (I4--BETA I engine) `96-`02 Hyundai--Tiburon/`96-`00--Elantra Supercharger Kit
Our supercharger system also has a suggested retail price of $2600 (price increase to $2800 as of January 1, 2003), uses the Eaton MP45 (4th gen.) "roots type" blower, and comes with an additional fuel injector, fuel pressure regulator, belts, hardware and everything else needed, plus a "Unichip" controller (already pre-set) to work with your Engine Control Module to maximize performance (electrical wiring is required), and will work on both MAP and MAF engines, without any other modifications required. All kits are pre-assembled as far as possible.
The supercharged kit improvements are 40+ HP & 50+ torque @ 4 lbs./psi boost (PLEASE NOTE: These are S.African vehicles tested with 97 octane gas, and no smog devices--U.S. vehicles increases will be slightly lower, and will update as soon as we've tested here). 1.8L figures will be lower due to lower baseline figures, but the percentage of increase should be the same--engine has a different bore & stroke. Dyno charts on U.S vehicles will be available soon.
The supercharger system has not been CARB certified yet, but are waiting for an appointment now, and should pass testing and receive approval within the next couple of months (making it retroactively applicable to any kits sold prior to certification). We are in talks with Hyundai now, and as soon as each (both turbo and supercharger) is CARB certified, and with their approval, plans are to notify all of their dealers as to the availability of these kits (as a possible dealer installed option), and that it will not void any factory warranties. Our systems as an aftermarket item, carries a "1-Year / Unlimited Mileage Warranty "against defects in materials and workmanship.
Supercharger Kit Updates as of 11/18/02
After trying to "test fit" on our `03 Elantra, have discovered that the (I4) BETA II engines are using a slightly different intake manifold and different fuel injectors (among other things), and have made the decision to tool up a new intake manifold for the `01-`03 Elantra/`03 Tiburon, and anticipate it's availability around February of next year.
Our 2000 "Test mule" Tiburon should go in for CARB testing within the next week or two, and will keep you appraised of certification.
Literature
My apologies, but I have been waiting until we have complete information and images (including dynos on U.S. vehicles) on each application available before committing literature to print. We have chosen an agency to handle our literature and press releases (King-Tec Communications--same people who created AEM's and Greddy's catalogs and literature) and anticipate having some literature ready by December, and may be able to get you (electronically) the files on each flyer prior to printing.
Shipping & Packaging
We are now using Fed-Ex Ground Service as our regular carrier, and have found them to offer not only better care and handling of our products, but in most cases, are less expensive than UPS. All shipments will be insured at their retail value. All of our systems are shipped complete in one box (typically 28"x 18"x 18" w/hand-grip cutouts), and average in weight between 50-to-90-lbs, with custom Styrofoam packaging to insure our products arrive intact.
Warranty
All of our non-CARB approved applications carry a "1-Year / Unlimited Mileage" warranty against defects in materials and workmanship (unless otherwise specified). Any omission or addition of parts, deviation or modification to our kit from its original intent, design, and installation instructions, or any additional modifications that may affect the performance and reliability of our kit as intended, will void this warranty.
We are still hammering out the fine print at this point in time, but anticipate having a "3-Year / 36,000 Mile Power Train" backed by Dell Financial Services (same people who back GM's warranties) in place before the end of this year. A Dell Financial representative or an "Authorized Alpine Developments Installation Facility" (which you can apply for) will be the only ones who can sign off on this. This may include and cover "official" upgrades from Alpine Developments . Details on this will be forwarded to you when this has been finalized.
Even more good news...we will be offering an optional "extended warranty" on the basic kit (no modifications at all) that can be purchased at the time of purchase of our kits, or up to 90 days after purchase of our kit, that will match the remaining factory power train warranty as long as the vehicle has less than 50,000 miles on it. (The price for this will vary depending on the length of the factory warranty being matched, but don't anticipate it being more than an extra $200-to-$300.) The details of this are not all set yet, but as with the other warranty, will have to be "signed off" by a Dell Financial representative, or "Authorized Alpine Developments Installation Facility". We should have all this in place by the first of the year, and should be available to existing owners prior to it being available! Unfortunately, any upgrades (even our own "official" upgrades) will not be covered by this extended warranty package. Again, details on this will be forwarded to you when this has been finalized as well.

Would I be able to obtain these head gaskets from Apline? Also, as far as installation goes, there aren't many shops around my area ( i live in Rural pennsylvania ) except for like one that does do a lot of installation of turbo kits for hondas, acuras, and neons. Do you recommend any shops in the Ny, Nj, or Pa area?To those w/ the turbo or supercharger kit and ballrub are there any problems I should expect to encounter? any dyno tuning time neccasary to start off with?
Thanks,
Greg

Outlaw Elantra...
Right now, we do not provide the head gaskets (and probably not until we can get a better price than $80 for the pair), so would suggest that you can probably get them yourself for less!
We are aggressively trying to set up dealers and "authorized installation facilities" across the country now, but for now, would suggest you contact Mike Carducci (Italiatib) at Sound Express for installation at (914) 804-3240. Otherwise, any shop who has installed Greddy, HKS, or similar products should not have a problem installing for you.
We are still "re-engineering" the supercharger kit, but the turbo kit lives up to expectations. The only reason you need to dyno "before" is if you want to compare the gains to stock.
High Tech Tibby...
Dynoing is just to compare the "before & after" performance numbers, and unless you are "tuning" it on the dyno for extra modifications (which if timing and fuel are modified, will require re-programming of the Unichip at an "authorized" Unichip dealer for optimum performance gains), really isn't necessary.
As answered in your other post about the installation, you would need to be fairly knowledgeable and have the proper tools (and hopefully a buddy with a twelve-pack) to install this yourself, as it requires the R&R of the head to install the decompression plate, and the R&R of the front bumper to do the plumbing for the intercooler.
