Default What controls boost? (semi-rhetorical)

Ok yall.

I understand the waste gate opens to prevent the turbo from spinning out of control. Well, in my case the WG is not opening so I am here to discuss possibilities. I’m getting too much boost for a stock Hyundai motor. I understand boost goes from the charge pipe to the wastegate actuator. At the pressure determined by the spring, the diaphram activates pushing a rod which opens the waste gate. If, in my case, the WG never seems to open, my diagnosis path should be to check the vacuum line going to the WG actuator, then check operation of the actuator by manual means, and then somehow test it with a pressure pump. Am I missing anything?

I would also chekc to see if your WGA is rusted/siezed or your WG. Pretty much on a cold engine, move it to make sure it will move, then try to find why it isn't moving via a leak. Could be some oil/blowby mucked up your charge pipe signal port (fx would be catch can/breather).

Though I might have read it wrong.... you go straight from your charge pipe to your WGA? No boost controller? Check to make sure your boost controller isn't siezed somewhere too if mechanicle...if electronic, thouse usually fail open.

Internal or external waste-gate? The vacuum line should actually be a pressure line .... pressure being produced will open it, not vacuum.

If it's an external WG make sure your hose is on the correct port, put it on the wrong one and it won't open.

He speaks of a diaphragm pushing a rod going to the WG, so it is internal, external would say diaphragm lifting a valve. And he said off the charge pipe, so dispite saying vacuum line, I am pretty sure he just means hose, foor boost or vacuum.

Yeah he needs to clarify which he is referring to, actuator or external WG. Then we can properly explain.
