Turbo And Safc2=no Good?
#1
In another post in this particular forum, I talked about buying and installing a turbo in my car. As the post went on, it got into what standalone/ems would be right for this set up. My initial idea was to by an SAFC2 and run that with the turbo, but was told that it would be fruitless and that I should get in on the impending GB for the PRS2 standalone. My only question is, what exactly is "no good" about running a SAFC2 on our cars? All I have heard anyone say is that they are no good, and anyone running one will want to switch to a standalone after a short time, but they offer no explaination as to why. $600-$700 for a full standalone is something that would crush my wallet...

1. The SAFC only cuts the MAF signal to tune the injectors. This inturn fuks up your timing because the ECU thinks your running half or twice the air you actually are. Depends on the injectors you have. There's more to it, but.............
2. The stock ECU does WTF it wants until 4krpms, no matter what you plug into the SAFC. And what it wants to do is lean the hell out of the motor, basically destroying it. It took mine 2 years of running lean before it burned the rings, but still..........
During WOT, the SAFC runs ok. You'll only be lean for that first time you floor it, then it'll start dumping fuel and take off through all the gears. But for daily driving, it sucks. Kaboom!
3. The SAFC will only cut 50% of whatever injectors you have. So 470's are pretty much the biggest you can run. I have these and the on/off throttle sucks and is extremely jerky.
4. SAFC + MSD will run you $650 new and does a halfassed job. The PRS can controll any size injectors, tune any way you want, and runs $675 for the regular price. The GB will probably be WAY less.

well, i havent had any experience with it, but i can tell you the information that i have heard from the grapevine.. i dont remember what setup you were going to be using, but if it was something extensive, you would want some sort of ignition timing which the SAFC II wouldnt be able to give you. You also don't have that much tuning ability right off the bat. i also have heard that after a while the computer basically realizes all the fuel your adding, and corrects itself more near to stock thus making you run lean. with a basic setup and not adding a huge amount of fuel over stock, i believe the SAFC II would be good, but not with extensive 200 +whp setup.
I am using the EManage with the injector harness, ignition harness, and MAP sensor, and also a second fuel rail, which solves the problem of the ECU correcting the extra fuel since the second rail is driven completely off of the emanage.
i would recommend you go with the PRS, because my setup cost more than that and will give around the same results as the standalone, but i will eventually max out the MAF and be screwed, and standalone, you'll be good to go, but have to buy things like MAP sensor, or MAS, or whatever it uses.. correct me if im wrong, just trying to help

Yea, you'll just need to get a GM MAP off ebay for like $40-50 which will allow you to throw away the MAF. fing02.gif
I love that part. lmao.gif

To Jon and Import, I do not plan on runinng more than 8psi of boost, and do not want to over 200 whp. I just want something that will give me some extra performance, with out car becoming a beast to drive. And let me get this straight, if I do not plan on running loads of boost, and keep it around 200whp, I will be ok with the SAFC2?

I have no idea. I never planned for anything less than 200whp since to me, it's not quick enough and it'll get beat by lightly modded civic/hatches.
I don't see it working for 8psi since I know it won't for 10.

At the risk of being laughed off the site, I have one final noob question. What would be the outcome if I did not install neither a SAFC2 or the PRS2? This seems to be the only "option" I have not asked about tongue.gif
