I went to a junk yard yest. and saw a couple of turbocharged SAABs and Volvo's. I took all the hoses off the turbo and pretty much every single turbo had oil in the compressor side. I can get those turbos really cheap, but don't want to just waste my money on a broken turbo which will leak oil. So do you all think that oil that was inside of the turbo means that the turbo is completely messed up and should be rebuild?

also would anyone recommend those ebay rebuild kits? I might rebuild it myself if i get time.

thanks

pashka

generally... oil inside the turbine housing of a turbo means the seals are gone.. probably still cheaper to have it rebuilt than to buy a whole new one though

Well you have to remember when you are rebuilding turbos there is a very small tolerance for the fitment of the bushing's (aka Seals), we are talking a 1000th of a inch, so unless you have the correct tools I would not attempt to do a rebuild. Also the turbine/compressor shaft my have wear on it as well.

so, you would not recommend doing it myself? I just dont wanna loose money and something that I wont be able to use.

JonGTR 06-03-2004 10:44 AM

I wouldn't. If anything, I would buy a new turbo.

Speed-Factor 06-03-2004 10:45 AM

Yeah I know how much it cost me to get a rebuild and by the time you get everything done with the purchase and the rebuild you would be a few off of a new one.

OdessitPashka 06-03-2004 10:45 AM

But the thing is that I'm trying to build a low budget turbo kit, and I dont wanna spend more than $200 on a turbo...

well, what about those rebuild kits on ebay?

JonGTR 06-03-2004 10:49 AM

$200???? Wait and save up man. What if the crappy $200 turbo gives out on you a month after installing it? Then you'll end up spending another $400 rebuilding or buying another crappy turbo. Seriously, thats one of the best things to save up for. It'll save you a lot of headaches in the end.

OdessitPashka 06-03-2004 10:52 AM

yeah, you are right, but I really don't want to spend more than I planned to... I know lots of people that bought their turbos for that price and it works for them fine, so I wanna be one of those people, lol smile.gif
