Default Midnight Motoring Turbo Kit for Feedback

Hello everyone I've been working on making a turbo kit for the Beta for a while now. Yesterday, I dyno'd the car for one last time on my race chassis and now its time to move on and continue testing a street car. But before I do, I was looking to get some feedback on the setup as I am always looking to improve on it. This kit is for the extreme enthusiast, not wanting to be beat by a civic with bolt ons.

The Kit includes

Top Mount Turbo Manifold

Precision 5557 Turbocharger

Precision 46mm Wastegate with dump tube

3" V-band Downpipe

Your choice of HKS SSQV or Tial 50mm

2.5" Intercooler Pipes

3" Front Mount Intercooler

Midnight Motoring 750 Fuel Kit w/ Fuel Pressure Regulator, Return line, and Walbro 255lph Fuel Pump

3mm Head Gasket

Intake Piping

All oil lines

I'm still up in the air on Engine Management but I know it won't be a SMT. Probably an AEM F/IC since 99% of tuners are able to fine tune this system. Right now on the race chassis I have a megasquirt, which is the best thing for this kit, but to be obd compliant I got to use a piggyback.

Here are some pictures of it on the race chassis with both he 5557 and 7076. Note that the exhaust will not come out the passenger front side of the car, but under and out behind the engine. Also the turbo and manifold will be made closer to the engine to keep stock radiator and cooling fans. This manifold was made for a 70mm turbo (really big hair dryer but you get the idea).

Pre Initial fitting on the engine stand. The wastegate in front of the manifold but now on the side.

Initial Test fit in the car

As far as power goes, just on wastegate pressure only (15 psi) we've made 331 peak whp. I'll post that graph when I get back to the shop since I pulled the wrong one before I left. But here's one of 328whp and 256ftlbs.

I have turned the boost up just a little not a lot no more than 4 extra psi, and yes 375 no problem. Here's a sheet @ 17 psi. 357whp and 286ft/lbs!!! With only 2 more psi and air/fuels still needing to be cleaned up!!!!

So what do you guys and gals think. Improvements? If you were looking to buy a turbo kit what else could you think of?

Feedback greatly appricated!!

Tom

I don't like the intercooling system. With that size turbo, and "extreme power" in mind, you should have 3" piping.

You should also have a top/down core with in/out on one side so ur not running so much piping.

Remember, the less couplers you have, the less chance of one popping off.

You may want to just switch to a water/air cooler.

I can see there's no room for a filter next to the rad hose. I know this isn't a daily driver, but I'm sure some would like to drive it around. I've tried the screen filter before, and ur turbo won't last long at all. Looking cool or saving 5hp isn't worth destroying a $1300 turbo.

Why is the wastegate port on the front of the first pic and on the side in the car pics? I believe there's more room in the elantras than tibs, so keep that in mind.

Nice numbers. Kit looks good, how much does one of those manifolds go for and who makes them?

Jon the elantra has way less room than the gk tibs i know for sure. not sure about the rd but everything is super tight on an elantra. The reason why it looks like there's a lot of room is because this is my race chassis. I'm not doing a water/air. I went back and forth on that one for a good 2-3 months. Too many possible variables from user to user. Whether or not they put ice water in it everyday, coolant temps from different altitudes. So so much. Yes there are variables with using a front mount, but less than using a water/air. I got some new end tanks that I'm going to be using with the next cooler I make. The pipes go through both sides of the radiator. 3" pipes are too large for this setup. That's a lot of pipe to fill, meaning more lag. You can make 600whp with 2.5" pipes. There is room for an air filter to go on the compressor housing you have to continue to rotate the upper radiator hose for it to fit. I just never run air filters. Not on any of my daily turbo cars or race cars and never had one eat something. Knock on wood. Oh and the original plan was to put the wastegate in front of the manifold like in the first picture using a half core radiator but everyone isn't using a half core radiator so I moved it.

Tanc I made that manifold I'll have them for sale once the kit is pretty much completed. Probably not going to be cheap though. I'll hook u up if your interested in it later though.

IMO, lag is highly overated. I've run a 60-1 on the Tib for years and it spooled just fine with a crap ton of 2.5" piping. I wouldn't hessitate to go to shorter run of 3".

And I dissagree with 2.5" supporting 600whp/800bhp efficiently, but it's your kit....

The RD's and same year Elantras have less radiator to manifold room than the 03+ Tibs/Elantras.

what jon said >>> "The RD's and same year Elantras have less radiator to manifold room than the 03+ Tibs/Elantras. "

just looking at it looks like you would need some different radiator setup than stock to even fit this in there, but no way to tell without measurements or it in an RD/J2. (how do you plan on pulling it so much closer to the engine as you stated above)

awesome numbers!!

how do you plan routing the DP to steer clear of the alternator with that setup? looks tight.

any idea on pricing?

what do you plan on doing for the MAF based cars?

looks like this kit is aimed more at the guys going for serious (more serious) power and mainly for the strip, no? (you said extreme, but also said for people not wanting to get beat by a civic with bolt ons which points to mild-medium build, not extreme)

FIC would be a good choice, BUT for the extreme enthusiasts they will probably want more tuning options for advancing timing, two-step, launch control, etc. etc.
