Hello fellas, I have pretty good knowledge on how turbo systems work, but there is something I just thought about that i'm curious about. It may sound like a dumb question, but here it is.

I know that turbo systems get air from the intake filter connected to the turbo and it goes all the way down through the intercooler which cools the air and through the engine. BUT, why do you need a big hole in the front bumper to expose the intercooler? air goes through the intercooler but does the intercooler actually in-take air as well? how would that work?

another question to that is, what if the intercooler was sumerged in a big puddle of water? is this like "hydro locking" ?

please, some answers!

thank you very much, go easy on me! smile.gif

Intercooler is up front so the air hits it and it cools it. It cools the air down like a radatior well not the same but close enough. Air goes through it and it doesnt take in outside air. If it could then you would have a big boost leak wouldnt you. So putting an intercooler underwater won't hydrolock the car lmao.gif

^^ Ye. Thats why people switch to front mount intercoolers instead of the stock ones which are usually in the engine bay. More cooling that way.

ooo i see, but does the air outside even on hot days cool the air going through the intercooler that much??

whats so special about the design of an intercooler internally that makes it what it is?

The turbo is very hot so basically any air will cool it. If you watch some dynos sometimes it turns red hot.

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/turbo1.htm It took me under a min to find. howstuffworks has alot of stuff.
