Default Injectors?

I was thinking of going turbo. The install looks fairly "easy", but the only thing that worries me is dealing with the injectors. I don't know anything about injectors, where they are, what they look like, how to change them. Is there more than one? When people mention injectors when talking about turbos, are they talking about the fuel injector, cause I only see 1 on hmaservice. If anyone has pics, install information, or anything I would greatly appreciate it, thank you!!

See the four "blackest outlined" items there between the intake manifold and the head? Those are your four stock fuel injectors. Stock size is rated to flow 245cc's per minute at 44psi fuel pressure.

You can increase fuel in several ways -- one, bump up the pressure. Stock injectors will flow around 293cc/min if you bump the fuel pressure to 60psi. The only problem is, higher pressure is harder on your fuel pump, and stock fuel pumps are weak smile.gif

Another way is to slap on a 5th injector, which kinda acts like a wet nitrous kit but without the nitrous. You install a little sprayer nozzle before your throttle body and that puppy sprays excess fuel when you need it. The only problem with this, just like nitrous, is that after a certain power level it becomes unsafe. Spraying a lot of fuel before the throttle body results in the fuel sticking to the walls instead of going into the motor -- and sometimes going more into one cylinder than another. Bad news.

The best way usually is to just upsize the injectors... Swap out the 245cc parts for 350's, 440's, 550's or whatever else. The problem with this is your stock computer is programmed to expect 245cc injectors. By upsizing to a 350cc injector (a 40% increase) the computer will still be expecting 245cc injectors, and thus will be working the 350's more than necessary. Basically, you'll end up over-fueling your engine by 40%... OOps.

The stock injectors on most cars built after 1990 are high-impedance (16-ohm) saturated-type units. If you are going to run bigger injectors on the stock computer, you will need to order a replacement injector that is still high impedance and saturated type.

Know of any high impedance and saturated type? And could I actually run my turbo w/o modifying my stock ECU? Maybe after install getting an S-AFC and adjusting the fuel? Can you run a turbo w/o bigger injectors? This car will still be my daily driver so I don't want to go too overboard, but I do want to see results. Thanks red, you da man!

If you're going turbo, there has to be more fuel somehow. Unless you plan on running like another 30 wheel horsepower max, bigger injectors are likely your only option.

RC Engineering makes high impedance saturated-type injectors for our cars; around $350-400 for a set of four 440cc injectors. These are the same type that Onpol used to make 230+ wheel horsepower on his stock motor and stock ECU.

You will need an S-AFC to adjust for the massive overfueling problems when not on-boost.

So basiclly I can start with a simple turbo kit max 25-30hp, grab some injectors and an s-afc in the "second round of funding" and adjust the fuel/air, then 3rd round dyno and tune? Did I miss anything? I was just about to buy headers when I realized I'm spending too much on N/A mods.

I don't plan on going to crazy, and I'd like to start small and work my way up, learning little by little.

I would suggest you grab the S-AFC first, with the turbo. you'll need something to adjust air/fuel with the turbo.

The day you buy injectors and an S-AFC is the day you'll have to take it to a dyno. Otherwise, the injectors and S-AFC are 100% useless.

I'm sorry to butt in the conversation. I have a Zex kit and would like to increase power. I know that I would have to replace my fuel pump. Will adding new injectors, 440's as you mentioned, and S-AFC be beneficials for my stock internals? How hard is the s-afc to install?

No offense ARN, but I would reccomend you start your own thread with this question in the Nitrous forum.

While I'm on the subject of switching forums...since this thread has to do with turbo's and S-AFC's and Injectors...I'm moving it to forced induction.
