John,
just checked a new set of pauter rods and they have the same shiny spot you have on yours
so it's not hitting,it's the spot made when they final hone them,
when they hit the block they hit much lower on the rod (toward the big end)

i never came acrosa bloc wich gave 14" of clearance without machine work...
Pauter ask for 1/16" of clearance wich is the norm when using aftermarket stuff
removing to omuch material from the lower part of the cylinder can make you break in the water jackets
and if you make the notch too long and high wil leave a nice spot in the piston itself after running a while

You mean 1/4" not 14" of clearence right? lol
Mine have about 1/4" of clearence on my Beta2 block so I'm good to go!!
John did you ever plastigague your rod bearing journals? Maybe you have too much clearence and that is the cause of your spun bearing?

yeah it's a typo
1/4" of clearance should have been writen
but anyway
1/16" is safe enough,no need to over grind the lower part of the cylinders
