In other words, how weak are the autos? Can they take some abuse or will they shatter pretty easily? A friend just bought an RD2 with an auto and plans to turbo it but doesnt want to go through the hassle of doing a 5 speed swap.

According to my gut instinct, a couple hundred horsepower, maybe. You would want a much bigger ATF cooler at the least, seeing as the stock one in the radiator isn't even enough to keep the oil from burning in <15k miles with stock power levels.

I've killed 2 auto trannies in my supercharged 1999 2.0l elantra wagon, after the first I put a shift kit and trans cooler and the second time I screwed the spider gear so I put a Phantom Grip LSD and it's been good so far.

With proper modifications the automatic tranny will hold whatever you can throw at it.
