How good are the stock Evo FMIC’s?
Depending what you're referring to as low boost then I guess it could be overkill size wise but other than that they work fine it's what I'm using running up to 15psi.
The stock Evo 8 and 9 intercoolers are pretty good. I have a customer running his stock Evo 8 intercooler at over 30 PSI on the stock Evo 8 16G turbocharger. Data logging intake temperatures on a cool night, he sees less than a 10 degree rise in temperature during a pull.
There are certainly better intercoolers out there but for a budget build running reasonable boost and power levels, I think the evo intercooler is a solid choice.

I ran upwards of 20psi and 350whp through a stock EVO IC. Above 20psi I started to see IATemps climb and pressure drop increase so I had to upgrade, so yes it should work for a mild build.

I have some new pressure drop data on this intercooler. We actually ran a bypass pipe on this same car, bypassing the intercooler last night (don't ask). We went from ~50-60 degree intake temps post intercooler to very hot intake temps. At redline however, with the intercooler, boost was dropping to around 22 PSI. With the hot pipe in place, boost was holding around 25-26PSI, suggesting that there is a 3-4 PSI drop across this core at this power level (around 450whp). Interesting data point at least.
