Thicker walled mild steel exhausts will deaden the sound a fair bit. I'd like to see whether changing the length of your center resonator would change the natural frequency of the exhaust, or perhaps deaden certain frequencies?
You will only be able to change it by a limited amount at any rate.

Can't sound like a subie, the subie boxer engine gives them a unique sound, almost like you can hear the cylinders firing individually or something it's just totally different sounding from an i4 which has a constant grumble. Big cams can cause pulsing but still not quite like how the subie sounds and it would only do so at idle anyway. Your best bet would be heavier gauge steel piping and either longer resonator or 2 instead of just one to make it deeper but like said you'll be limited anyway as to how much you can change to tone.
