Default Boost controller question

I have been wondering this lately and figured I would just ask and end the curiosity.

When your running a turbo with a boost controller, what is the proces of turning up the boost? I know most of them is a knob kind of idea and you just put it at let s say 9psi or whatever you want, but when upping it do you have to do anything special.

I dont mean engine changes like internals to handle the boost but can you change it while driving? Do you have to put it in nuetral? shut off the car? restart the engine? reconfigure the boost controller?

Just curious if it is something you can do while waiting at a stoplight then go again.

All you do is turn the "KNOB" clockwise.. Then boost goes up, no need to reset anything, or turn off the car.

...turn the knob up high enough and the car turns itself off!

I have that with my AEM boost gauge but its not set up, all i do to set my psi is press two buttons and change the duty cycle seems to work ok for me but i wish i could just choose a psi that would be just too easy lol
