2l Conversion
Hi there,
Posting on behalf of a friend
We're in Australia (right hand drive), he has a 1997 Hyundai Coupe FX (Tiburon) with the 2L motor.
(im pretty sure this is what his motor/engine bay looks like: http://www.capa.com.au/pics/kits_hyundai_coupe.jpg )
At the moment he has an opportunity to purchase an Evo 4 2L 4G63 motor at a good price (with the turbo, computer, wiring) which has the belts etc on the same side as his stock motor...
so whats involved? (modified/new engine mounts. what gearbox if he wants to keep it front wheel drive, new fuel pump? new air con compressor????)
any info appreciated, especially if yous know anyone who's done it or has pics of a conversion.

As stated, do a search and you should find several topics on this. You shouldn't need to touch the gas tank though if it's remaining front wheel drive.
I'm not sure what Australia has to offer for transmissions, but thats key at this point. If you can rewire the ECU, and make custom mounts, that should be a big hurdle to jump. I say, if you find a front wheel tranny to go with, its worth a shot. You may need axles too. 4g63 engines in the states for the past 10 years have been oposite as far as belts go (Betas on left side, 4g63's on right), its only recent that the Evo VIII came out that the engine matches ours. I don't know exactly what the australian evo 4 has, but i would take asecond look at the mounts first. the engine needs to sit in a way that a compatible front wheel tranny is going to have compatible axles connected at proper lengths.
ok this weekend im lookin n mayb pickin up an evo4 engine to go into the 98tib
this is a pic of a evo4 engine... as u can see the belts r on the same side

im getting the engine dayum cheap from a JDM importer family friend
engine mounts r not a problem.... as i can get custom ones easy
the only prob i have is can i match the tib manual box to the engine????
this guy has done the conversion... but he used the evo box

Umm...if you're getting the engine, why don't you pull off the transfer case from your Beta engine and check if it bolts up to the 4G63T?
Or...I can save you the hassle and say it won't work. Whichever you want.

Already exists...maybe YOU should do a search. laugh.gif
As for a 4G63T AWD powertrain swap into the Tib? Already exists as well (check somewhere on CarDomain.com for the guy's Tib...which was also mentioned on here...so...do a search. laugh.gif ).
I dunno why anyone would do the swap and KEEP IT FWD! Why would you want to keep it a FF (front engine/FWD) if you could do an FA (front engine/AWD) swap? So you're going to turbo the hell out of the 4G63T, make about 300-400 HP, render your vehicle into an uncontrollable car that will have horrific torquesteer and possibly wind up wrapped around a tree?
Yeah...I dunno about you, but driving around with more than 300hp on FWD car is pretty damn close to bull-riding; eventually, you'll get thrown off/out of the vehicle, and you're going to be in some pain.
I'd suggest you HAVE the money to complete the ENTIRE swap. Yeah...you can buy your engine, tranny, fuel cell, etc...in different stages...but when you're going to be throwing everything together, I'd suggest you have the money to finish the swap.

I'm not sure if they work for the Evo gearbox, but if you search on the DSM forums, there is a blocking plate to put on the AWD gearbox to block the rear-drive. I heard of them using them on the Eclipse/Talon/Laser AWD units.
