Vehicle: 2004 Hyundai Sonata 2.4l
Default 2004 Sonata 2.4L Turbo ECU

Hi all, very happy to have found this forum and it's got a lot of great info.

I have a 2004 Sonata 2.4L with the 4g63 engine. I've slapped on a turbo and done everything up to the point of the ECU/tuning. I bought an AEM FIC at the recommendation of my local tune shop, but both him and I are struggling to track down a pinout for the 2.4l. I read it's almost identical to the early 00's Lancer. Don't know how true that is.

Are there any known wiring diagrams/ECU pinouts? Any other ideas or advice would be much appreciated!

Thank you in advance

Wait....2004 Sonata's never came with a 4G63. That engine is a Mitsu engine, not Hyundai...unless you or someone else did a very custom swap.

The early Sonata's could handle a 4G63 very easily and was almost a direct swap at the time since back in the late 80s, early 90s...Mitsu was building all the engines and tranny's for Hyundai. But Hyundai started doing their own stuff in the late 90s and now to put in any type of Mitsu engine involves a ton of work and fabrication. More than what it's actually worth doing.

Anyway, you wont find much in terms of tuning for that year and model because it's extremely rare to install forced induction on it. And as far as it being close to a Lancer...that's a negative. There might be a couple of small things sort of related, but for the most part...it's a unique Hyundai design all the way.

Wiki claims the 2.4 is a Mitsubishi Sirius and the 4g63 lists the 04 Sonata, but that must be incorrect because *63 is a 2.0. The 64 came in previous generations so that may be, but it is indeed a different engine. I'd wager it's the 4g69 if indeed a Mistu 4g.

Edit: According to rockauto, who i would indeed trust on this, the crank is shared on these vehicles:

CHRYSLER CIRRUS (1995 - 2000)

CHRYSLER PT CRUISER (2001 - 2005)

CHRYSLER SEBRING (1996 - 2005)

CHRYSLER VOYAGER (2000 - 2003)

DODGE CARAVAN (1996 - 2005)

DODGE GRAND CARAVAN (1996 - 1997)

DODGE STRATUS (1995 - 2005)

HYUNDAI SANTA FE (2001 - 2004)

HYUNDAI SONATA (1999 - 2005)

JEEP LIBERTY (2002 - 2005)

JEEP WRANGLER (2003 - 2005)

KIA MAGENTIS (2001 - 2002)

KIA OPTIMA (2001 - 2002)

MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE (1998 - 2002)

MITSUBISHI GALANT (1998 - 2002)

PLYMOUTH BREEZE (1996 - 2000)

PLYMOUTH GRAND VOYAGER (1996 - 1997)

PLYMOUTH VOYAGER (1996 - 2000)

For all intents it's a 4G64, but with a Hyundai proprietary head and hardware. Not the same motor completely, but similar base like the Theta.

It's listed as the Hyundai Sirius engine, which is also the name for the Mitsu, but if you look into it there is very little beyond the crank, general dimensions and maybe rods that are share. Even the block and pistons are Hyundai/Kia specific.

The cylinder head and valve cover on the Hyundai 2.4L engine looks identical to the Evo 4-8 4G63.

okay . . . who lives close enough to a junkyard and has enough time to go see exactly how similar these are?

The Mistu 4G64's of this era were SOHC from the looks of things. But I am reading some reports that the '63 head (evo7+ of course) may fit this head, I know it takes a good bit of work to get one onto a Mistu 64. Though TBH since the Hyundai is already DOHC it's pretty pointless especially with forced induction unless someone is selling a pre-worked head.

From my DSM days I know that the biggest difference internally between the 63t and 64 (aside form the block) were the rods and crank. Since the 63t was factory turbo the rods are forged. The 64 being a 2.4L has a longer stroke as well, but iirc the block is no different aside from being a few mm taller and larger bore, to make up that half .4L. There are a ton of threads about built 4g64's out there and with a little google-fu found a thread where the DSM seems to have already discovered this motor:

http://www.evolutionm.net/forums/evo...64-thread.html

So it does look like this is a 4g64 Mistu block mated with basically a 4G63 (non turbo) head. That would be why the head is not reported as a direct swap. Sounds like a ton of options for real power here.

This being the case how has it not been well documented in the Hyundai community for the past decade plus?

As for the original question without webtech access I don't know that anyone here will be much help.

There is this thread which is a good start:

https://www.hyundaiaftermarket.org/f...4-ecudone-%3B/

I haven't been able to locate a schematic but here is an image of the ECU labeling. That may be a good start. I hope that helps. I'm interested to see where this goes.
