tranny making noise
under coasting and acceleration, i don't hear any noise. when i'm decelerating, there is a slight grinding noise coming from (i think) the tranny. i mean, i never heard the noise before the swap, so i'm assuming it's the tranny. i was thinking that there may just be some slack in the gears? i bought the tranny with approx 23,000 miles on it from a wrecked tib. i was thinking that the tranny might have been slightly damaged in the accident. any suggestions?

does the sound ONLY happen (or only audible) under deceleration? If so, the I would suspect CV joints or gears inside the tranny.
If it happens at idle, then it is flywheel/clutch/pressure plate releated.

I know is pretty late to answer for weird nose on automatic tranny, but I might be the only guy how has the same problem that you. Mine started on december 2002, when decelerating, a weird hissing noise occurs. I have an automatic transmission. The dealer has checked and concluded that the transmission is broken, so they changed it and problem fixed. What I didn't told them is I had an accident my car and the noise started then. I had exactly 23000 km on it like you. So to answer your question, an accident may cause the weird noise. I hope that you didn't get my broken transmission
check your mounts after i did my swap
i had the everything still on the jack when i tighened the mounts up wich i dont no how but the
rear tranny mount would hit the sway bar when decerated and i just loosed front and rear tranny mounts and the engine rolled forword enough to clear it
