Default Taller Gearing = more speed

hey everyone, in my old car(it was a 90 eagle talon tsiawd) what i did was put the 1+2 synchro from a galant vr-4 into my tranny. i got an extra 7mph in first gear under normal driving conditions, and +9mph in second under same conditions. i was wondering if i could get the 1st for sure and probably the 2nd gear synchro from a 2000 tibby and "drop" them in my tranny. the gears from the galant were exactly the same size so it was a basic mod. any infohelpideasexperience.....

the 2001 Elantra has

First 3.615
Second 2.053

The 2000 Tibby has
First 3.462
Second 1.950

Using the Elantra's final drive of 3.650

Elantra 1st 32 MPH
Elantra 2nd 56 MPH
Tibby 1st 33 MPH
Tibby 2nd 59 MPH

So in other words...A tibby 1st gear would get you 1 MPH. A tibby 2nd gear would gain 3 MPH.

Your choice if it's worth it.

yeah, not as much improvement as id hoped...but that is under normal conditions right, not under high rpm's....if it isnt, then 2nd gear would be worth it to me at least....i dont know- thanks for the post

If your going faster in a given gear, then you have raised the gear ratio, meeaning that your engine spends more time at a lower RPM (when accellerating) then it would if the gear ratio had not been changed. This translates into a slow accelleration.

For better accelleration you want a lower gear ratio. Instead of changing gears though, you can just change tires. If you want to go nutz, try some 4x114.5 mm R13's from an accent.
