Default gear oil...

when i did the tranny swap, i just bought some (i think) valvoline sythetic. i know it was synthetic, gl4, 75w90, but i'm not sure if it were valvoline. i read in a recent post by random that non-synthetic gl4 is safe. is synthetic gl4 safe, too? i do know that mobil 1 synthetic is not good for our trannys because it eats copper (if i'm not mistaken).

Any gl4 is safe.

Any gl5 is not..

Plain and simple.

Last time I checked I think the valvoline synthetic is gl5. You might wanan check on what you did put in your tranny.

EDIT - It eats yellow metals. Like the brass in our syncros.

question: Why is gl5 not safe when it exceeds performance of the gl4?

Thanks

cysco, like shadohh said (and has been discussed many times), gl5 eats yellow metals, like the brass in our synchros. gl5 MAY exceed the lubrication performance of gl4, but whatever is in gl5 (i don't know what it is), eats yellow metal. see what i'm saying? as far as lubrication or heat resistance or whatever, gl5 is probably better, but there is obviously something in it that doesn't go well with the brass (or any yellow metal) in our synchros. just stick with gl4. i hope i didn't sound condescending. smile.gif

no you didn't sound condescending! I was just confused. I just put it a GL5 in my tranny and on the back of it, it said safe for use in transmissions requiring GL4. So that just really confused me. Oh well...actually im on my way in a minute, to get some Redline MT-90, since I have Redline oil in my engine..might as well have it all...and to be on the safe side too!!

Thanks

Yes, I have noticed that.

But...apparently they are wrong. Or we just have some goofy transmissions.

If you guys really want some extra heat protection and awesome lube, use normal GL-4 and add some Lucas Oil stabalizer (you can get it at your local autoparts store, ie. autozone, adv. auto). This stuff makes my tranny shift as smooth as silk and i have a '97 w/ 111k (eventhough the tranny was rebuilt it still shifts easier/smoother than before). I recommend it. wink

You wanna know what's funny about the GL-4 GL-5 debate?
My owner's manual (97 Accent) says to use EITHER GL-4 OR GL-5.

suicide

Whatever, I'm putting Redline MT-90/MTL when I do my next oil change.

Says gl4 or gl5?
Are you sure? I would need to see the book or a scan of page to believe that. As of the moment I dont.

Webtech says for 97 accent Hypoid gear oil, SAE 75W/85W, API-GL4

Just like the accent 2001 and tiburon 2000 says.

Why is gl5 bad?

The most common current gear lube is 75W90 GL5. This upgrade from the GL4 has an increased amount of a sulfur based additive that may damage the brass bushings in the gearbox and OD, especially at elevated temperatures, so most folks advise against using it.
