Default another 5spd swap question

I have a 1997 fx tiburon with a 99 2.0 liter in it. I broke reverse gear and I can hear grinding and other noises in the trans. I'm going to swap it out becasue the trans has 173k on it I don't want to rebuild it. I found a good deal on a 1997 elantra trans with 89k on it I know it will bolt up, but ,will the 2.0 clutch and flywheel work or do I have to get a 1.8 liter clutch. I tried searching on forum with no luck. Thanks for the help.

If this is on a car that is already a stick-shift you're good to go. When converting from an automatic, you need to worry about the flywheel mounting. The data: in my conversion thread: https://www.hyundaiaftermarket.org/forum/in...st&p=541075

If you get the flywheel from a 1.8L you can use the adapter made for the purpose, available from your local dealer. That is what I did.

The clutch itself is a universal part . . . on the authoritative cross-reference list, they are said to work from 97 through 06 ( ! ) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Hyundai-Tib...sQ5fAccessories

Correct me if im wrong but is the crank shaft different from 98 -00 so if you install an 00 clutch on a 98 you need an adapter plate?

00-01 tibs had different cranks i had to buy a new flywheel cause i failed to see an adapter on my crank i had a 2000 motor and 99 clutch/flywheel sett-up.

i believe the trans is the same except for autos

the flywheels and cranks are different through the years

The flywheel bolts to the crank, not the clutch. You need to adapt for the flywheel.

he doesnt need to adapt it unless he is changing his flywheel or his engine. if he is only doing his transmission he should be fine.

I'm sorry if I was not clear. The car is already a 5spd I just want to put a low milage 97 elantra trans in it because I found a great deal. Right now it has 99 2.0 motr in it with a 1997 flywheel and clutch and itit works just fine I broke something in the reverse gear and it it is making noise in 1st and 2nd. I am upgrading the clutch to a clutch master but I will use a 1997 set up and keep the flywheel and just resurface it. I Just did not know if there was a big differnce on the 1997 tib fx 2.0 to a 1997 elantra 1.8 trans besides the 4th gear being a little different. Thanks for help>

Just wanted to give an update. Installed the trans and it work great no problems. I did not put the updated clutch in it yet. I wanted to make sure the trans I got was good to go and it is. After x-mas I will be putting in the stage 4 clutchmaster clutch and having the head set out for some port and polish work.

Get a spare head to be reworked if you can. Then your car isn't down until the head comes back, and if the head comes back bad, you still have a known-good head handy.
