So what's the trick with these cars? I changed the tranny fluid to redline mt90 and verified the other day that the level is to the top of the fill hole. Still didn't help. Its really bad on cold mornings...and just a little hard when its warmed up. I have to push so hard I'm afraid of breaking my shift cable. Other gears can be notchy when cold, but its mainly first.



Car is an 01 with 142k on what I'm sure is the stock transmission and clutch. Would changing out the slave cylinder and bleeding it help?

 

Sounds simulare to my problem I had. Check the rubber bushings at the end of the shift cables at the trans, mine were worn out. There will be a metal retaining pin you will have to remove then pull the washer and the bushing will be exposed, do this for each cable. Also make sure the bracket that holds the cables at the trans is tight. I also found some damage at my shifter because of the slop developed at the bushings.

124K on stock clutch... there's your problem.

 

I'll check out the bushings to the shifter cables. I imagine the clutch is getting time for a replacement...but I didn't think a bad clutch would cause a gear to not engage. I thought it would just slip as you were trying to accelerate (rpm's go up but speed doesn't)? There's no slipping at all on it.

 

Worn disc = slipping. Worn pressure plate or worn t/o bearing = hard to shift.

 

Gotcha, thanks. Is there any way to check the clutch disc and pressure plate wear without pulling them off the car?

 

Nope. There is only some many things that can cause your issue if your bushing, cables, slave and master are good its most likely something with the clutch, PP, or TOB. With those miles I say get you a good clutch kit and switch'm out.
