I see no problem in keeping a Dev and Prod server for testing. Yes, you can do it on a virtual machine, but Josh already has the setup in order and it's working smoothly for him.

Would the forum posts transfer to the new version? If so, that's my only concern.
The shoutbox is also a very large part of the site. I'd like to do anything necessary to retain functionality.

The data will be maintained.

The new version has a fully integrated chat feature.

The upgrade should not be a question. The database dump to virtualized hardware and what addons we use should be the question.

As long as the threads and member data remain, and the shoutbox can be worked in, I say dew it. It's transparent to me and 99.995% of the rest of the members how it all works, we just know it's slower than it ought to be. If DTN wants to volunteer to put the old features in the new version, let him have at it.

As far as skins go, I'm still butthurt I lost IPB Blue when RDT shut down laugh.gif

Maybe not right away, but test some features out to kind of find a best of both worlds type thing?

All threads, posts, and member info wouldnt go anywhere. Thats all stored in the database, which the new version doesnt really touch too much, other than the way the Search feature works. Its more or less just new functionality, and a new look & feel.

Is there a non-cloud option for version 3x?

Something I didn't see mentioned (or I missed it) is that for the most part keeping a board current is also a virtual necessity regarding security.

Hackers will often go after an older version of a board that is no longer being updated.

From just this security standpoint, I'd support updating the board.

I already have the new forum software loaded up on my test server. Just working through and trying to upgrade all the modifications. Its been a challenge, but I'm getting there slowly. Hopefully I can transfer everything from the test server to live server within 2-3 weeks.
