I was congratulating myself for getting second.

Well, a lot of setup went into my shoot, and I chose the two pictures I felt were best out of the 100+ pictures I took over 3 hours. Artistically, it's difficult (at least with my equipment) to simulate a larger scale with subjects that small. That was at least the effect I was going for, whether it was a success or not is questionable. Most of the pictures I took were of the rock crawler with it's suspension flexed crawling over different landscapes I set up for it. In the end I thought it told a story with these two pictures and I thought the story fit well with my interpretation of the project, which was randomness. Compositionally there were some other pictures I liked better, but without more than two pictures they would not have made any sense because too much of the picture was dark.

I looked at the assignment from the point of view that the more random the subject of the pictures were the better the points reward would be and the rest would be based on composition and creativity. As far as that goes I see it was not everyone's interpretation which is fine. I do however take offense to the statement that I "should do something artistic instead" because artistically the pictures are pretty good, and at least in the top half of the submissions. The subject may not be to some people's liking, but most people can appreciate the artistic value in something they don't particularly care for. But that's irrelevant.

I was inspired by this:

I thought it would be fun to do a miniature figure based version and for me it was and I was reasonably pleased with the result. I would explain what I feel the second picture in particular caught and what I thought made it a good picture, but I won't bother.

I'm still trying to find something worth taking pictures of for the next assignment. Considering that most of my ideas involve snow I most likely won't have a chance to take them before the deadline but possibly.

I had this Macedonian lady as an english teacher once (yea....like that makes sense) anyways, whenever she brought up the topic of appealing to readers' emotional needs, she would tell us to think of the baby seals, show us pictures of the cute fluffy ones, and then pictures of people bashing them on the heads. Nice lady...

No, you didn't mess it up, and I hope it doesn't sound like I'm being a sore loser because I'm not. I do think my pictures had some artistic merit and I wanted to explain that though. I am happy with second, my first post I was just being a smartass as usual. Hell, I didn't know if anyone at all would like my pics. I thought there was a good chance nobody at all would vote for mine and there were some really good submissions.

Don't be sorry, and please continue the photo contests. I don't think you messed it up.
