Essentially that is pretty correct.
The series is very light (read: softcore) romantic erotica with hints of the BDSM lifestyle thrown in to spice things up and make it "controversial." When really, its about a virgin girl who gets together with an experienced Dom and "teaches" him that he doesn't need BDSM and submissive women, because there is such thing as real love, etc., and that is much better. Oh, and that he was only really into BDSM because of a relationship he had when he was young with an older woman. I found it to basically insinuate that you can't be into BDSM unless you had a horrible childhood and have control issues, though I'm sure that wasn't the intention. It was a pretty interesting read regardless, entertaining even without the sex.
Girls are into it because the guy is "hot", and they wish their sex life was as awesome as the couple in the book. You know how silly girls can be.
