It's been a while, so I will refresh the memory of the old timers, and introduce myself to the new guys:
These are Hyundai's only RWD passenger cars until the Genesis!
I drive a 1987 Hyundai Pony (I've had 11 so far) which started out like this:

which now looks like this:

/Jed118?feature=mhum#p/a/u/1/j82glMjTJTI
/Jed118?feature=mhum#p/a/u/2/jNNK65NP4l4
This car now is for racing, I will build a cage for it later this year (hopefully) before I go to Korea. It is not the final paint job, this is a coat to unify the car to one color and also to see what stress cracks emerge in the fibreglass work before the final paint ('01 Prelude metallic blue)
The bodykit is made of the following stock parts:
-1987 Escort GT front bumper
-1991 FSO Polonez front lights, grille (to be moulded to hood contour, not yet done), and corner lamps, moulded into the fenders
-1982 Camaro hood vents
Different car - 4G63 Pony 2.0, no longer exists
-1991 Chevy Cavalier Z24 side skirts, cut shortened, and reversed
-1981 VW Rabbit GTi fender flares
-1986 Escort EXP rear bumper
-1989 Peugeot 405 tail lamps
-Factory GT spoiler
-1990 Dodge Shadow power heated mirrors
-1999 Mercury Cougar rims (205/40R16 front, 215/55R16 back)
Engine-Driveline modifications
-Reconditioned full suspension (ball joints, control arms, inner-outer tierods, sway links, brakes, calipers, rotors, rear shocks)
-5spd manual swap (was 4, thinking of putting it back in though)
-Lightened (12 lb) flywheel (stock 19)
-200mm Accent GT clutch disc stage 1
-1.6L Engine fitted (was 1.4L)
-0.030 inch shave on head, 3 angle valve job, port and polish
-Very aggressive race cam (284 I think, half inch lift, tons of overlap)
-Electric high volume fuel pump
-Rochester DualJet 2xbbl Mechanical carburator (designed for a 305)
-Modified IM to fit this carb, bores enlarged, ported and polished
-MSD 6T, tach adapter, Blaster2 coil, rev limiter (6200, but I am building a two stage circuit for it)
-Stellar2/Excel electronic ignition, with lighter distributor springs and opened plate for further advance
-Self made exhaust (donor headder was from Dodge Arrow, made my own mount plate for bolting to the head) 2.25 inch straight through resonator and Borla muffler, side exit
-"Sport" and "Econ" mode, which adjusts the timing (shuts off vacuum advance) and in the future will limit the revs to 5,000 RPM ("Sport" requires 91 octane due to compression, which is 9.2:1)
-8.8mm Heavy duty Taylor wires.
-Aston Martin spark plugs (nothing fancy, just colder NGK's)
Interior Mods:
-Power remote locks (solenoids and assemblies courtesy of Stellar2)
-Power windows (rear only, I don't mind manual fronts) courtesy of Stellar2
-Factory HD Pony GT steering wheel (Momo)
-RD Pedal covers
-1989 Prelude 5 way adjustable seats (apparently made by Recaro)
-Leather shift boot (same Prelude)
-5 Point race harness (front)
-GLS door panels (this was a base model) and rear seats (50/50)
-Rear high mount stop light and wiper ('87 GLS model hatch)
Future mods:
-M90 Supercharger (80% done)
As a result of starving the bearings during Mosport last year:
-4G67 crank, wiseco pisons (essentially boring it out to a 1,785cc)
-Windage tray, baffle plate, and/or an oil scraper
-Stellar2 rear axle (5 point multilink) with Ford Contour disc brakes and calipers
-Stellar2 front spindles with larger, vented rotors and calipers
-Nismo 240SX adjustable front shocks (that will fit into the two-piece spindle ass'y)
Here's my 2nd favourite Pony:

Assembly line:

The red Pony (the blue one was what the black one was)

Now for my Stellar: It is a 1987 CXL 2.0 4G63 fully loaded (minus air), power everything, and unfortunately, automatic.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/49254803@N04/5011627005/
All mods:
-6000K HID
-Driving lights
-7 speaker sound system with 200w sub (nothing crazy, just good, clean sound), some decent 50w/channel JVC deck w/remote and USB in
-Base model steering wheel (looks better IMO)
-Rear fog light integrated into:
-1986 Firebird spoiler
-Escort EXP/GT 15 inch rims (summer use)
-Redone side moulding
-2.4L (4G64) 12 valve head with cam, and rocker cover
-Balancer delete
-Electronic fuel pump (no mechanical provision on 4G64 head)
-Underhood fuel PSI gauge and regulator
-Rebuilt carburator with minor tuning (jetting, she's thirsty though!)
-MSD SCI, Blaster2 coil, Tach adapter
-8.8mm Heavy duty Taylor wires.
-Punched cat (1987 - no emissions anyways)
-2.25 under axle exhaust - resonator and Magnaflow muffler - annoyingly hits the diff sometimes...
-Volvo Radiator, with Mercedes tubing, Nissan tubing, and XD Elantra remote filler neck (done out of necessity more than anything else, but fits well)
That's pretty much it. I haven't done as much as I wanted to over the years, especially since I am now "free"
, but school and work takes up a lot of my time. I'll get there though!

I'm sorry Jed, but I die laughing everytime I see these cars. It's awesome that you have such a dedication to the Pony (kinda like HKC to RD1s - I think he'll be burried in one when he dies).
I miss the look of the patriotic red, white, blue (and black), but I guess changing it to one color makes it more appealing.
I always love seeing your weird fascination with the Pony, and it's great to see you working on them to make great cars. Piecing together parts for a build can't be easy, and it looks like you've got quite a few donor brands.
You need more engine bay pics. When will the supercharger be completed?

Hehe, when I finish school, I'll have a month off before I start teaching at York, then I'm off to Korea for a year (most probably) to teach there, so hopefully at that point!
I'm going to farm out a lot of stuff in interests of time saving.
See the vids for engine bay viewing!

I'm looking at the mod list, and it's amazing how many different cars are pieced together in the black Pony! 9 cars, likely more. It looks great.
The day will come. I'm in a similar spot but this is my last year at undergrad before moving on to Masters.
If you saw the F2 you might see what is to love. I could have bought the widebody kit and reproduced it, but nobody would have bought them given our skiddish market. I waited too long and it got parted last week on UKHCS
Jed's Pony was designed by Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. The most legendary and historic automotive designer in the world who is responsible for every successful car name out there, the original Mustang, Lotus Esprit, Golf/Jetta/Passat are just a few examples. His designs were absolute classics.
Also until the 2000's, Giugiaro's own company founded in 1968 Italdesign was the most highly technologically advanced design, R&D, prototyping, engineering, and testing facility in the world. He would rent it out to a lot of manufacturers including Hyundai, where the Pony was designed (Yes, in Turin, Italy!).
It was thanks to Giugiaro and the Pony, that Hyundai exists in the U.S. today. The original Hyundai Coupe was also by Giugiaro made in Italy. These new Hyundai tuners know nothing of this history. Therefore I have loads of respect for Jed's passion. Way to go.

Nice, thanks for the love!
Basically, what I wanted to do is if Hyundai decided to make a Pony3 sport (mine is Pony2, or "New Pony"), this is what it would look like after a final facelift. Needless to say that in 1992 (when the chassis was officially retired) it was already 18 years old, and still came with points ignition and a manual choke, chain drive OHC 8V, and deprived of a catalyst. Obviously, by 1992, Hyundai were making their own engines and their own designs (1993 was Tiburon's prototype, with final road going versions in 1994 - I think I still have the Car and Driver spy shot of it from that year) so they would never have undertaken this redesign.
Still, in some countries, such as Romania, the original Renault 12 was being produced FAR past it's prime, and indeed, the Lada 2107 is still being made in Egypt.
The taillamps were selected because they have the same flow as an X3 Accent (which is essentially a Pony in Europe/Australia) and the front end because that's what Daewoo did when they redesigned the FSO Polonez, which is itself an uplift from a Fiat 125 on its third incarnation. Pretty much everything save the headlamps (I had a Pony with a Stellar2 front end conversion some 6 years ago) could be reproduced as I have made it when new. All the parts were selected with thought, and fitted painstakingly with tonnes of glass-fibre. So really, it is still OEM, but a homogeneous mashup of various manufacturers - True to Hyundai of the time which used Mitsu engines, Ford axles and bolt patterns, British management, and Italian design.
It's a mutt, and it is now even more so with a bevvy of domestic and import parts, as can be seen.
I must say however, that with my recent trip to Cuba, this car would not stand out quite as much as it does here (save for the ridiculous engine noises)
EDIT
I forgot the mods to the cooling system! B12 Nissan crossflow rad, with Mazda MX6 cooling fan (electric conversion)
