It won't 'randomly explode" per se. It will act like someone is shaking it up and it will overflow the cup, but the reason a bottle works so well, is one, it is almost full and not much room, and two, it has a relativly small opening so pressure can build allowing much of an explosion. Also it isn't like the entire mentos is reacting, much of it is still covered in ice. Which can make it even funnier, when they are sipping for the next 5 mins so it doesn't spill.



But it still can be funny to try and watch them notice it rising and trying to drink it before it makes a mess. Just make sure you wait untill the ice cube tray is almost frozen, as if you just put the menots in cold water, by the time the water freezes, the mentos will disolve, making nothing more than a minty ice cube.
