So, everyone I know calls the day after Thanksgiving Black Friday. But no one knows why. I have heard some theories. But nothing stuck. I am open to suggestions, perhaps someone acutally knows?

maybe it's just called that cause its meant to be a badass shopping day?

 

it's black friday to those who have to work at retail stores. Worst shopping day of the year

 

^ exactly. its utter chaos. black = death... and death is what all retail employees want to experience as opposed to working that day. lol... for the company i worked for that day (for 3 years), they wouldn't allow anyone to have that day off from work. mandatory work

 

I googled i and found this: "The origin of Black Friday comes from the shift to profitability during the holiday season. Retailers went from being unprofitable, or "in the red," to being profitable, or "in the black", at a time when accounting records were kept by hand and red indicated loss and black profit." For some reason I always thought black friday was something that started cause of a war or something in the middle ages lmao.gif

Haha.. I wondered that all day today at work. I worked from 8 - 1 at American Eagle.. and now I understand. At first I was thinking well, I work a morning shift.. perhaps most people won't be awake to go shopping.

WRONG!!

I had trouble finding a place to park at 8 in the damned morning.. most stores don't even open until 9:00!! I've got such a headache now.. I do just want to die.. lol.

^^ Well, maybe that explainst the full parking lot at 8:00 AM.. lol. I just assumed we opened then.. but I do remember some of the managers talking about being there since 5 AM.. that's crazy. Thank god I wasn't there for that long.. lol

 

I am out of retail now, but for 2002, 2003, and 2004 I was a slave to the retail.

In 2002, I was 16 and working at Toys R Us on Black Friday. I had to be there at 6am and I didn't get a lunch break until 12:30pm... and left at 2pm.

2003 wasn't so bad. I was 17 and working at Best Buy, so I worked 6am to 2pm also. I was in CD's.

2004 was NUTS. I was 18 and still at Best Buy. I had to be there at 4:30am for the store's opening at 5am. I was a line manager while I worked in the CD department. I went on my lunch break at 1pm to 1:30pm... and came back to work in video games from 1:30pm to 8pm when I left. Talk about a long freakin' day. Not to mention, I was a backup cashier for when a cashier needed a break.

The lines were outrageous. The people were incredibly rude, and vulture-like in appearance and behavior... and it was just chaos.

But this year, I work in food service so it's cool. laugh.gif Thank God the mayhem is over with. <3
