LOS ANGELES (AP) – Teenagers are showing up in Los Angeles emergency rooms after drinking inexpensive liquid hand sanitizers to get drunk.

Cheap and easily accessible hand sanitizers contain 62 percent ethyl alcohol.

The Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/HXEj9v) says six teenagers have shown up in two San Fernando Valley emergency rooms in the last few months with alcohol poisoning after drinking hand sanitizer.

Some of the teens used salt to separate the alcohol from the sanitizer, making a potent drink similar to a shot of hard liquor. Distillation instructions can be found on the Internet.

Although there's only been a few cases, county public health toxicology expert Cyrus Rangan says it could signal a dangerous trend.

I would never do something like this. When I was a teen, if I wanted to get drunk, I would just have my older sister buy it for me.

Pretty soon you will have to be over 18 to buy hand sanitizer.

No, 21+ since it will be considered an alcoholic beverage.

Kudos to the teens for sourcing alcohol elsewhere, actually. Why else pay attention in chemistry?

the whole way kids are raised these days is retarded. Little to no discipline and or supervision. they all have phones and computers so they can LOL and whatnot constantly. When are kids going to start getting there asses beat for being stupid again? maybe there should be a common sense course in school instead of some of the other crap. I did stupid things when i was a kid but if one of my friends said lets eat soap we'll get wasted Id say you try it first then laugh and call him a dumbass

Yes, this is stupid. But in all honesty, when you were 14, 15 or 16, getting drunk seemed like the coolest thing in the world. Me and my friends used to force ourselves to drink olde english malt liquor because it was 8% alcohol and $3 for a GIANT bottle. Cheapest way to get drunk that we knew of. We would do almost anything to get our hands on booze. Kids have just found an easier/cheaper way to do it. When I was a kid it was mouthwash, this is nothing new, just a new way to do it........ where did I put my beer???
