I heard a while back about the gov't requiring cigarrette companies to put a picture of a cancerous lung on the packs, but someone told me today that the law just passed. The gov't is going too far! What's next?
A hyperactive kid on candy wrappers?
A diseased liver on a bottle of rum?
A fat person on a bean and cheese taco wrapper?
Rotten teeth and kidney stones on a can of coke?
The big G has to be fair to all industries right?
(Disclaimer: I'm against cigarrette smoking. This is about the government sticking their nose where it doesn't belong!)

...It's not going to deter anyone.... There's obviously enough information out there to caution you AGAINST smoking, yet so many do still... What's a pic of a f*cked up lung going to do?
if i was a smoker, this would not deter me at all.
if i was a drinker, a diseased liver or something wouldn't affect my decisions at all.
i'd like to see the hyperactive kid on candy though.. HAHA

Singapore currently has this implemented.
My GF is a smoker and she has the same sentiments as you do.
She'd just cover the picture and go on her merry of smoking.
Sure she'll be grossed out but that's only until she decides to cover / rip the picture of the box lol
If the government would want to curb smoking, the only effective way (i think) is to raise its SRP via increasing the Sin Tax (i dunno if you guys have "sin tax" in the US).

sad thing is that probably cost the taxpayers a million dollars to get implemented. Like you said thats going to have little to no effect. The solution is to raise insurance rates higher on those that smoke and refuse medicare/medicaid support for smoke/alcohol/obesity related illnesses. Effectively making it too expensive to smoke.
edit: wow, isn't this is really going to raise the cost of packaging to have full color photos all over it???

double edit: jon I wish the government was equal to all businesses. To bad thats not the case. The day the government starting giving grants to certain businesses to build/buy land to "attract jobs" was the day that went out the window. Not to mention the hypocrisy of the bail out.
