As much as I hate Jeremy, I agree that the Prius is a waste of money; it's not even enviromentally friendly(because of batteries lasting only 100,000 miles). I heard it takes about 15 years for the Prius to actually help you save money on fuel because of the price the Pruis costs. The only VW Diesels that are worth getting are the ones now. Previous Diesel costs a fortune to maintain. The only types of cars that you will actually save money are the : Honda Fit, Nissan Versa, New Hyundai Accent, VW Jetta Diesel and the Toyota Echno.

VW has always made good diesels, K-R. Family friend had an old Rabbit Diesel that he put 300,000+ miles on before trading it in on a chrysler (which only lasted 5 years). All it needed was a new glowplug fuse every year.

That was the 1st generation Prius, the 2nd gen is more nature friendly, runs around 25 - 28 grand if I remember right, and is way, way uglier. BTW, if I could take a 50cal to a car I hated, I could die a happy man...

Ok, but I'm talking about Price of car and gas mileage ratio. You will actually save money in a car that gets good gas mileage and cost below $11,000. I've been hearing that VW diesel's cost over $22,000. I heard that you have to replace the fuel filter every 15,000 miles. This new VW diesels that are coming in 2008 are suppose to have the same emissions level as a econo gasoline engine. I look forward into this engine.

ever since 1998, I've been wondering why people don't build a cheap Diesel/Electric Hybrid and why dont' manufacturers build locomotive type diesel engines? (Engine recharges batteries, drivetrain runs 100% on electricity)
