Tomtom
As some of you know, I am in the process of driving to Oklahoma right now to help move a friend. Driving an 18 foot penskie truck with an 8 foot trailor behind it.
Right before I left, I purchased a tomtom 1 instead of relying on maps.So far it has gotten me through a snowstorm in West Virgina, and it made navigating St. Louis Mo. a breeze (i did accidently cut off a semi).
For anybody looking for a good portable GPS unit.. I compleatly recommend it, so far it has saved me a LOT of hassle in maps and got me through a confusing tangleof roads near the St. Louis Arch.
Now I just need to meet the cute sounding Brit that inhabits my GPS..I have so far trusted me with mylife in getting this far

how much did you pick one up for?
where did you get it?
do you have to upgrade software? and if so, is it free? or do you have to purchase new software?
i would sooooo get one if it had a built in radar detector

I am not sure onthe upgrading of the software, I still have to check into that.
If I had a more modern phone with bluetooth, I could hook the two together and get traffic reports, weather, Instant messaging (Why you would want that while driving, I do not know), and even the ability to download famous voices to guide me (john cleese anyone?)
I paid about $300 for it at staples, so we will have to see what I get back from my rewards card.
As for navigating the snowstorm,it is accurate enough to give you a pretty good "3d"view of the road you are on. Driving through the mountains in W Va, we just caught the front edge of that snow storm, so we were only in it about 2 hours (thank god) but it was a nice help in showing me where the road was going and it gave me enough time to really slowdown before some of the sharper turns on route 68.

does TomTom have WAAS? I will not use a GPS in the United States/Canada/Alaska unless it's WAAS enabled. EXTREMELY accurate (garunteed to +or- 7 meters).
Tomtom is cool, has a lot of detail and stuff but I love my Garmin Nuvi. Id recommend that to everyone too if a tomtom wasnt available etc. Both of those units are on the tops of the list.
GPS's are just awesome..many a time where i was in a jam and it got me out of it.

gps in my carpc.
gilsson antenna, garmin oem receiver(size of a match book) hooked up to serial port.
pauses or attenuates my music when it has something to say(sexy female brit voice as well), and i get ~10 satellites with the antenna under my wiper cowl.
massive poi database, 3d maps WITH street names, and so many more options/features it isnt even funny.
but yeah, gps is awesome. i feel like i have my own rudolph.
