If you have a stripped thread
how do you go about replacing it?

Both a bolt thread and the thread the bolt screws into.

Do you have to go a bigger size bolt?

I heard something about a tapper set but i don't know???

Help :?:

Default Stripped threads/Bolts

You have to get a tap and die set the tap will go in and redo all the threads if possible if not you need to go to the next size up. If the hole is small then the next size tap then you have to redrill the hole a slight bit smaller then the tap. Then run the tap into the hole. On the bolt you can get a new if not the die will recut the threads on it as well. You can get tap and die sets at your local auto store. But you need to take in the bolt to make sure its the right one and they could also get you the right tap as well. If they don't work then you know you need to go to the next size up. It's not to hard to do we do alot of retapping at work on the airplanes.

If the hole is barely stripped.. try chasing it with a tap the same size.. sometimes you get lucky!

You would go with a bigger bolt, and re-drill and tap the hole
I work in Tool & Die.
If you told me exactly what size (Metric or Imperial) i could tell you exactly what size tap drill , and tap you will need to upsize it.
yeah, ...the worst thing is having the tap break in the hole I KNOW!!

LOL

I tap holes EVERYDAY!
I tapped about 30 holes today at work. 3/4, 5/8ths 1/2 (+.005) 3/8ths , 5/16ths , 1/4, 10/32, M12 , M10 , M8 etc,... hell, you name it - i bet i've tapped it!!

If your not sure what size drill you will need, - it should be writen on the side of the tap,
What kind of thread is it? NC, or NF (national course/fine)?
meaning , are the threads big or small concerning the spacing?

Oh,...and when you drill out the hole to make it bigger - make sure your running it at a slow speed - or you will snap your drill [buy and brand new drill it has to be sharp]
*and make sure you counter sink that hole before tapping it - or you might break the tap!

tapping fluid is your friend!

any questions, i'll be here to answer
