I drove up to St. Louis with the wife for a long weekend for our one year anniversary. There is a ton of stuff to do in that city, and most if it's pretty cheap, if not free.
one way: 310 miles, 4 hours, 14.4 gallons of gas
We went up in the Arch, went to Grant's Farm (zebras, buffalo, exotic animals, Clydesdales, etc.), tour of Budweiser Brewery, Union Station, St. Louis Zoo, Missouri Botanical Gardens, and hit up a few good restaurants.
Here are a few shots I took on our trip. (only pics I've resized so far) Pictures taken with my dad's Canon EOS 400D Rebel XTi (10 MegaPixels) with a two different lenses (EFS 18mm-55mm and a 75mm-300mm UV Haze lens)
St. Louis Arch - $20 for two to go to the top
Grant's Farm - $8 to park, everything else free, plus complimentary Anheuser-Busch beverages
Bud Tour - Free, plus complimentary Anheuser-Busch beverages
Union Station - Free
St. Louis Zoo - Free
Missouri Botanical Gardens - $14 for two
Not only did I get a free night at the Renaissance, they gave me a free upgrade to a 670sq. ft. Executive Suite and Free Parking (usually $14/day)

it's great that you plan your vacation spots. were the buildings taken from your hotel room? reminds me a little of europe how the buildings are lit up.

No, the pics were taken OF our hotel. They were taken from the 9th floor of the parking garage. The tall building to the right is the Renaissance hotel. The tall building on the left is the Suite Towers of the Renaissance Hotel (where we stayed). The shorter building to the left were awesome loft apartments starting at $138,000... really nice and the top floor had roof balconies. We were staying on the 19th floor out of 24. I was amazed at how great the pictures came out.

I am a Marriott Rewards Silver Elite member. I travel for work and try to stay in Marriott's as many times as possible. I have two credit cards, one earns Marriott Rewards points and the other earns American Airlines miles. I redeem those for free flights and vacations. Marriott Silver Elite members are those who have stayed 10 nights a year in a Marriott. I've stayed 29 nights in a Marriott this year, so they see me as a loyal customer. Anytime you check into a hotel, ask for a free upgrade. It can't hurt, and the worst they can do is say no. I also put that it was our Anniversary on our reservation, so maybe the desk clerk had a soft heart. It doesn't really cost them any more money to give you a bigger room - if the room's available, why not make the customers happy and let them use the room? They've definitely earned my repeat business from this experience.
If you want to know more about earning points and/or miles, PM me and I'll tell you all I know. It's really not that hard, and you can't beat free stuff.
