Sharks close Florida beaches as 15,000 swarm the coast

Thousands of sharks seen off the coast of Palm Beach, Fla., and heading north along the coast have shut down several of the state’s beaches.

“We saw something moving in the water and everybody was saying, ‘Ahh! Sharks!’” one witness said to ABC.

The sharks, mostly blacktips and spinners, are making their annual migration, ABC reports. But their presence is unusual at this time of year. The sharks — estimated by Florida Atlantic University researchers to be in the range of 15,000 — usually wrap up their migratory travels well before beach season in the South.

“It’s the beauty of living in Florida,” one beach-goer told ABC. “It’s also the danger.”

Researchers say the sharks are only 200 yards from shore.

We've been getting abnormally high levels of sharks off the coast of west australia too. There's a big debate on what to do, some people want to kill them all, others want to hang nets around the beaches, others don't want to do anything.

Hey, at least they aren't on land.

If they kill the sharks, can they salvage the meat and make shark steaks?
