Most people would be lucky to visit lottery headquarters once to collect a jackpot. Joan Ginther, of Bishop, Texas, recently made her fourth trip to Texas lottery headquarters in Austin on Monday.
Corpus Christi Caller Times reported that Ginther, 63, won $10 million, the top prize in Texas Lottery's $140 million Extreme Payout scratch-off ticket.
Her latest jackpot makes her total winnings $20.4 million. This was was her third time to win in Bishop and the second time to buy a winning ticket at Times Market at 525 Highway 77 Bypass.
Ginther lives in Las Vegas, but buys tickets on return trips to Texas. According to ABC News , not much is known about her except that she used to return to visit her father until he died. A neighbor said he thought she had once worked as a university professor in California.
She has requested minimal publicity from the Texas Lottery Commission.
The Caller Times reported that she had her first win in 1993 when she won a $5.4 million share of an $11 million Lotto Texas jackpot. She went with the annual payments of $270,000 minus tax charges for 19 years.
She then won the top prize of $2 million in the Holiday Millionaire game in 2006. That was on a $30 scratch-off ticket. She accepted a lump-sum of $1.5 million.
Two years later she won a $3 million prize in Millions and Millions, another scratch-off ticket.
Yahoo! Buzz wrote that the odds of winning the 1993 prize was one in 15.8 million. It was 1 in about 1.03 million in 2006, 1 in 909,000 in 2008 and 1 in 1.2 million in 2010.
Michael Starbird, a University of Texas at Austin math professor who has written a book on coincidence and other mathematical quirks, said the odds of a four-time win are less likely than being hit by lightning. He added that it is "pretty astronomical."
Her latest win was not only lucky for Ginther, said lottery commission spokesman Bobby Heath. Times Market, which sells about 1,000 tickets daily, is again eligible to receive a bonus of $10,000.
"Most of our 16,000 retail stores have never sold a winning ticket," he said to the Caller Times .
