I'm sorry guys, don't mean to offend any lifetime waiters here, but that's my feeling on the subject. I have a deadbeat brother here in ABQ that waits, and for one reason, he can get paid under the table. He owes over 60,000 dollars to the local college and university and has been avoiding paying anything (And therefore getting his degree) for the past 10 years. He complains and b****es about tips and such, and I just don't agree with it.
MINIMUM wage is there for a reason. WHO the hell ever thought it was okay to drop it for wait personnel was dumb. Now you have at lest 70% of the folks waiting tables NOT claiming their tips on their taxes, so we lose out on tax money. That's retarded. Waiters WORLD ROUND should stand up and demad what others have, and NOT have to depend on tips. Tips should be just that, an EXTRA, above and beyond the MINIMUM wage that others make for even easier jobs.
I'm not saying that Waiting is easy, I know it's not. I worked in foodservice for too long to say that.
BTW, if you are doing something to get you through college, I commend you even more, I just don't agree with LOWER minimum wage for wait people.

Uhm...
Anyway....
The things you see online want you to pay $10 to sign up to get offers as a secret shopper from local businesses/corporations in your area. You don't just sign up and get a job. You sign up for $10 and wait for the offers from these places. If you take an offer, they pretty much give you an assignment. Usually you have to say certain things, act a certain way, purchase or look at certain things, etc. Usually they send you money to purchase these things and you fill out a report. In return, you get to keep what you bought and you'll get money after you submit a report.

I signed up at 3 different places. I didn't pay anyone for anything, and they have no way to bill me for anything. They e-mail me and I check their website for updates, and I choose what I want to do. They'll mail me a check.
REDZ - I chose to be a waiter last year. I chose to get paid $2.13/hr (btw, that does nothing but cover taxes). I averaged $15/hr. at that "below minimum wage" job I chose. wink1.gif didn't bother me. And since I was working at a fine dining restaurant, 95% of the people paid with credit cards, which has taxes taken out of the paycheck.
I do understand to a certain extent the reason for tips. It's a service you're providing. Think of it as an independent contractor rather than employee. If you have an incentive to give better service (tips) you usually will work harder to please your customers and provide a better service. If I know I won't get a tip from a group, what's to keep me from refilling their glasses, rushing their order, getting their order right, etc.? shrug.gif
just a thought..... anyways, NO MORE OFF-TOPIC REDZ!!! This is my topic!!! offtopic.gif

^^ well i agree with redz, with the way things are right now your a bad guy if you don't leave a tip. Of course I always do thats not what I'm saying. I just think that waiters are working just like everyone else and deserve regular pay. Those tips should be be for someone who does a good job. The way it is now if someone does a crappy job your still expected to leave a tip. Which I definently don't think is right.
I agree with fonseca, raise the prices, pay more and I'll give a tip when it's deserved. waiters and waitresses will come out ahead.
anyways back on topic, I haven't done the secret shopper but I definently see it being more of a pain than it's worth. If it goes ok let us know.
