Is it possible to make a lot of money selling scrap metal? People that I know who have done have only made a couple hundred at most and they had to have a ton of metal to make that kind of money.
Scrap copper is where the money is. I'm an HVAC mechanic, when I was installing a/c's (I now do mainly service work) our company allowed us to keep the old outdoor unit, indoor coil and copper line set. Stripped of all the worthless metals, the a/c and the old lineset was worth apx $40 or $50 in scrap, we would install 2 or 3 a/c's a day for 5 or 6 days a week....... you do the math. $$$$$$$$! Then one employee got greedy and started to steal new copper from the company to cash in and got caught. The company no longer lets the employee's keep the old a/c and cash them in for themselves.
I don't get how these guys in pickup trucks picking up scrap metal from the garbage make any money. Once you pay for gas there can't be much $$$$ left!?

I can get $5 for a kitchen trash bag full of flattend steel cans. Sheet steel is $125 a ton, cast iron was $250 a ton as well as thicker steel. They will give you $400-500 for a car with a title.

I got $400 for a 97 Taurus body, no interior, motor or trans. $500 for a '93 Taurus with interior and motor, no trans. I had a '91 Festiva I had to give them as I could not find the title.
