QUOTE (REDZMAN @ Jun 7 2005, 10:19 PM)
Standard Camo.

Matter of fact.

2000 points if you get it going with that skin, and a bonus 5000 if you do us up a GOOD skin for the site, with all buttons, in Camo. The current "Army" one is a bit gay.

You know, I was thinking of making a custom skin for this site.

If I get the free time, I'll make a cool camo skin. Not sure when I'll be able to (currently have 3 sites to do) but if I get a chance, I'd definitely like to.

Good idea!

But frontpage news are not changing very often. Maybe it would be better to do the same but with Shout Box?

^^^
Not a bad idea. I didn't notice earlier that this was for the news.

I'd do it so you can swap it between Shoutbox, Frontpage News, recent posts, or a thread you wanna track.

I don't believe it can be done w/ the shoutbox.

The way it works is it fetches the RSS feed from the site, and the shoutbox doesn't produce an RSS feed.

Java gave me the link to RDTib's RSS, and with it you can specifiy which forum to pull news from.

I just figured the "news" would be most relevant, but it could be changed to any forum (off-topic, performance, etc).

So it's pretty much limited to what the site can produce into RSS.

Right now on my desktop I have it showing off-topic titles.

Ok, after much thinking, I think this is the best way to go about this...

It would be clumsy to fetch ALL new topics and deliver them (who wants an update from the new users area, for example?).

So it's going to work like this:

By default, it will show some new topics from different areas, which you can scroll down and read.

But you will be able to right-click it, go to preferences, and then select a specific forum you want to check for updates.

The list then updates to what you selected, showing the thread title, the url to it, and when it was updated/posted.

There still is a problem with special characters, such as "!" and " ' ". This is sadly something I will not be able to fix. The way the RSS feed is generated is that it automatically converts those characters to their HTML counterparts. The RSS reader I am making reads the raw text givin to it, and does not parse/convert HTML to human-readable text. Generally, RSS readers are coded to handle this and can display it fine, but there is a whole team of people working on that.

I'm not going to code in the interpreter to this tiny thing - that would take far to long and not be worth it.
