Shortly after Columbia lifted off Jan. 16, a piece of insulating foam on its external fuel tank came off and was believed to have hit the left wing of the shuttle. Leroy Cain, the lead flight director in Mission Control, assured reporters Friday that engineers had concluded that any damage to the wing was considered minor and posed no safety hazard.
so that might have caused it instead...

The Space Shuttle Columbia broke up on re-entry to the atsmophere. At approx 9:15 EDT, at around 200,000 feet, and traving 12,500 MPH, the space shuttle broke apart and dropped off NASA's telemetry system.
Debris is scattered across Eastern/Central Texas, South/West Arkansas, Louisana, and some is expected to be have hit the Gulf of Mexico.
My heart goes out to the astronauts families.

"Do we really have to come back?" astronaut David Brown jokingly asked Mission Control before the ride home.

It's a very sad day, and my thoughts are out to the families of the astronauts.

NASA is wonder the exact same thing. Looks like the died quickly. I certainly hope so. Death by fire.....
But, lets not forget that these were explorers who knew and accepted the risks. Their mission is larger than anyone member. They died trying to find ways to improve life for all humanity, not just Americans alone.
Though they are now dead, remember them fondly for they died in a great cause....and doing what they loved.
