I have a dell inspiron 8200 running windows XP home edition. After formatting the harddrive and reinstalling windows it no longer detects the onboard NIC. According to dell its a 3Com 3C920 integrated lan so I downloaded the new drivers for it and rebooted but I still keep getting "Ethernet Controller missing" in the windows device manager. Anyone know a fix to this problem or know where I could find the solution?

You downloaded the new drivers but you did not say whether or not you installed them. Have you? I know it seems kind of silly, but I have seen stuff like that before. cool.gif

BTW, some dells have a problem with sound card/nic driver support. if you install custom OS, it might not recognize the existing HW...

You could have it disabled.
Check your BIOS.

it's very likely that it fried. but what do you mean it says missing in device manager. if it's missing it should just not show it...

anyways grab a nic, i've got a few here, say 15 shipped?

Thanks for the replies guys and to follow up:

Javageek: Lol, yes I installed the drivers

Loyen: Yea I made the mistake of buying a Dell after coming back from overseas which I am still regretting to this day.

Zoned: Checked the BIOS and it reads enabled

Supercow: The device manager states "Missing Ethernet Controller" in other devices.

According to HELL err Dell Tech support well they pretty much blame the malfunction on my end. I think thats what they are supposed to do now if they don't understand English.
