I'm doing a persuasion speech, the topic is changing the law so that the elderly must be re-tested to be able to drive on the roads. Nation-wide.
I am part of a group speaking about this topic to all 5 speech classes, (so like 200ppl) and I have about 10 min. to kill.
My portion of the speech is about local elder and their driving habits. I decided to go and rent a camera from the Media Services on campus and go film examples of elder's driving bad.
I'm sure I'll get "real" footage...but I am also renting an elderly man costume from a store and my friend is gonna drive his car around doing stupid shit with the mask on.
I need ideas to dumb things elder's do wen driving.
(REDZ, it would be great if I could get examples from an elder himself nana.gif ).
Like;
hitting the gas instead of brake. (hit something)
going in reverse instead of drive (hit something)
going 30mph under the speed limit
stopping at a green light because you were afraid it was going to turn yellow.
I'm gonna be a reporter (Steven Colbert-style) and track down these elders after driving stupid and ask them questions.
This isn't the first time I've used Rdtiburon.com to help with my h/w. lmao.gif
BUt I'm open to suggestions...
The main idea of this video is to be serious but funny. (Like the daily show).
Start throwin ideas my way.

LOL this is something I would do for class.
Find yourself a nice one lane road that gets a decent amount of traffic, or get someone else to do it on a two lane road, and literally drive 20mph in a 45mph zone, with you filming from the bushes. Wait until actual real people get stuck behind them and get pssd off. Adds a lil real world flavor to it. Might take a while to find a really grumpy person that will redline it down a double yellow, or get someone that you can see through their windows that they are pissed off. Main thing you need to do one of these funny projects good is time.
One funny thing I saw around here was an elderly person that would back into a spot until they hit the pole, then stop. Maybe if someone has a really beat up car you could to that.
Maybe falling asleep at the wheel and driving off the road into some bushes... there are so many things that old people do wrong when driving.
Course there are crazy old people that drive fast too. There is a 96 year old lady that lives beside me and drives a 1995 Mazda RX-7 TT, 5 speed. She redlines that sucker too, I've heard her spin tires out of her driveway.

ok well my grandmother is a big example for why we need this law... one day while backing out of the garage (just has to pull straight back to get to the street... it's not like its a goofy driveway or anything) she nearly hit the basketball hoop (off the edge of the drive way) 4 times (pulling forward and trying again) before I finally got out of the car and made her let me drive.
Another time she nearly backed into a tree while trying to get out of another driveway (this driveway at least wasn't a straight shot... you have to turn to miss the tree and get on the road but still!)
Another problem with some older people driving is currently most of them just don't know how to drive they think they are doing it the correct way but haven't really been tought the right way. Also road ettiquet has changed (not that most people follow any ettiquet)...

great ideas.
yeah, I don't know anyone with a per se; beater. But rental cars always work. cool.gif
I love it when they are pulling into a spot and stomp on the gas thinking it's the brake. I'm gonna do that for sure for the video in the rental (like onto a curb stopper). wink1.gif
And I just had an idea. When I interview them about their habits, I'm gonna ask them (the elderly) if they would like to participate in a mock driving test. lmao.gif
oh man, this is gonna be great.
And I'll have someone in the back seat film... and the old person (most likely my friend with the mask on) will be the one driving. I'll be giving the test and just have them fail everything. Parallel parking should be fun.

Slower reaction times.
Being oblivious to surroundings. An example would be when I was on a neighborhood road going 25mph and an elderly at an intersection ahead of me obeyed the stop sign but instead of even registering my existence she turns and starts coming at me (she was driving at oncoming traffic). Luckily there was no oncoming traffic so I was able to swerve to the oncoming lane and back.

^^^ lmao.gif
How about them stopping for turns. Only time when it makes me mad when they stay there for 10 secs or so and the speed limit is 45-50 and backs up traffic. mad.gif

I don't think we should eliminate old drivers state-side. Just re-test them to filter out the bad ones and keep the good ones. LOL, or just to show old people that they need to re-learn how to drive because the way they drive now is hazardous.
this is gettin thrown into my speech, lmao.gif
