everyone dogs on the vdub guys for their rusty hoods but as long as it's got something under the hood, i think a modern rat rod is the perfect way to describe it.

Actually, yes. I have always thought rat rods were a dumb as hell excuse to not bother with making your car not look like ass with the excuse of being some sort of "modern art". I have NEVER seen a rat rod that wouldn't be better if done up nicely.
Maybe it comes from growing up in a place where old duct taped POS cars were what people normally drove because they couldn't afford better, not because they thought messing up a perfectly good car was "cool".
