Just thought that a Iwould mention that Toyota is bringing back or thinking about bringing back the Toyota Supra to the United States, but I doubt it will live up to days of ole.

 

Yes they are. It is going to be back to the "roots" of the Supra. A lightweight, rear drive NORMALLY ASPRIATED performance car, not the high powered Luxury barge it turned into in the late 90's.

Rumored engines are the IS300 V6, the Celica GT-S I4, and possibly a revamp of the good old I-6 (that leaves the doors open for a turbo or two later down the road from TRD, or Toyota...or adapting a current TT kit to fit the new engine).

I don't have anything more than that...but when I do...I'll post it up.

 

Okay... This annoys me.

The Toyota Supra does not, nor has it ever had a V6 engine.

The "V" in V6 indicates a V configuration. In the case of a V6 that means that there will be 2 banks of 3 cylinders angled to the crankshaft at an angle of less than 180 degrees.

If someone said that the Tiburon had a V4 engine, you'd know that this is not correct, right?

The Supra's engine is an I6, where all 6 cylinders are lined up, (this is sometimes called an L6 configuration, as well.)

Yes, Toyota is talking about bringing back the Supra. This is a topic of much discussion on the Supra owner's group.

Rumours include:

[*] It will be brought back, but under the Lexus nametag.[*] It will have the 4.3L V8 engine from the big Lexus machines[*] It may be redesigned on the same chassis as the Lexus IS300[/list]As to the "high powered Luxury barge" aspect of it, I think the 1987-1992 model years are more in that category than the 1993-1998 ones. The 1993-1998 model years were far closer to the "lightweight true sports car" than the late 80s/early 90's models were (And I should know, as I have a 1989 one. )

And as a FYI, the IS300 engine is the same basic engine as the 1993-1998 Supra had, but in a VVT-i trim. That engine is also shared by the Lexus GS300, (but not the LS300, which DOES have a V6) The engine in the GS300/IS300/Supra is a 2JZ-GE. The twin turbo Supra has a 2JZ-GTE. (The "G" means DOHC, "T" means turbocharged, and "E" means EFI.)

Yeah I heard the whole LEXUS thing naming process but NO Toyota is naming it the Toyota Supra I have the article in front of me thanks.

 

I think it'll never compare to the old one. I saw a pic, it was ugly. I never really like many things Toyota does anyways. rolleyes.gif

I told my girlfriend for a long time that I would own one of two cars if they were in production when I finished grad school (a year ago): The RX-7 or the Supra. Oh well, 1 year too late.

It'll be nice to see; shame I can't afford one and keep my Tib (which I would not trade in).

I guess what triggered it this time was the V6 in the IS300. The IS300 has the smae engine (2JZ-GE) as the 1993+ Supras do. That's an I6, not a V6.

Of course that means that the rumour about it having the IS300's engine would be "old news." -- It already had that engine (minus the VVT-i which the IS300 gets)

 

The IS300 does get a V-6...just not on US shores. It gets the 3.0L from the GS300 in Europe and some parts of Asia.
