hi guys, thought id bring my concern to the experts. im indifferent about this black box idea, on one hand it could prove a benefit to accident investigations, and on the other, it could lead to tickets being mailed to you for speeding, or rolling through stop signs, or failing to slow to a yellow light... anywhere, anytime.
your thoughts?

Black boxes aren't just for airplanes anymore, it seems. Though car companies have been installing the devices at their discretionsince the early aughts, a new bill, ominously entitled Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century, has just passed Senate approval containing a provision that would mandate the inclusion of these Event Data Recorders in all automobiles produced from 2015 and on. Privacy fans may already be reaching for those protesting pitchforks, but keep in mind this legislation still needs to pass the House of Representatives on its way to becoming law. And given its other, more controversial elements (i.e. revoking passports for unpaid back taxes), it could still head back to the recycle bin. If it does pass Congressional muster, you'll still have ownership of any collected data, so long as the court doesn't require you to hand it over. Regardless of the outcome, we wouldn't breathe a sigh of relief just yet -- your car might be snooping on you as we speak. Just check your owner's manual.

I don't think it will lead being fined every time you hit 66mph. It's more likely that they would install speeding cameras before they would track every car on the road in real time. The uses for determining crash events would be helpful though, as long as it's not used as a leash from big brother.

I'm not sure if this is true, here's a link to the full bill: http://epw.senate.gov/public/index.c...7-c9f4ff22484f
Reading through it I don't see anything, and searching for several related terms in the document didn't turn up that information.

you dont think so? we do it already at toll booths. if you run a toll booth, you get a ticket in the mail. what about traffic cams. i got a ticket in the mail last year from a camera.

and clearly that topic belongs in the General Performance section, i especially like the title of the topic, "What the fuk????" clearly at a mere glance, a topic on black boxes.... so since this place sold to that new place, are the moderators getting paid to do nothing?

Well I was looking for information that confirmed this section in the actual bill. Turns out the copy I saw was an earlier one without all of the passed sections.
Full version confirms that all 2015MY cars have to have the data recorded: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/112/s1813/text
Just keep in mind, this bill still needs to actually pass the house and then be signed by the president before it becomes law.

There, fixed that for you.
And yes, we get paid. The more (less?) nothing we do, the more we get paid. All of us. Wheelbarrows full of cash. I have it on good information* that magic only won the weight loss competition because he was hi on coke for a month and didn't eat anything but cheese sandwiches. The forum paid for all the sandwiches but we cut off his coke budget after a couple of weeks because DAMN that boy can inhale some lines.
edit: and no, he didn't even pay back the HyundaiAftermarket Staff Hookers & Blow Fund with his $10,000 he won. As if that would have covered his tab anyway but the gesture would have been nice, right?
*or maybe I made it up.

what a shady bastard. if the hookers and blow fund was established, it should be paid in full by now or at least have a budget planned. for shame.

I share the same views, and I think George Orwell was more right than wrong. Unfortunately, that's how it all starts. Tracking will be used for accident analysis only but soon enough, they will require every car to be tracked, then sold over to insurance companies and nobody can do a thing. The harder you drive, the more you will pay. Mark my words, this will happen, it's only a matter of time.
I've said the same thing for speed cameras a decade ago and look what happened:
I have a good sense of history and have seen and read how things have changed and can change. There's no stopping these kinds of things, they just happen and new generations (babies born today that will be in their teens tomorrow) must accept the new mandates.
The first amendment is a big joke today. Who would have thought that 30-40 years ago?!
